Women's Basketball Falls to VCU, 67-46

Richmond, Va. - The Greyhounds shot 20-for-25 from the free throw line but just 13-for-54 from the field in a 67-46 loss to Virginia Commonwealth at the ALLTEL Pavilion Sunday afternoon. Loyola was led by Katie Scherle with 10 points with Michele Cosel added 16 points off the bench for the Rams. The Greyhounds fall to 2-6 on the season while VCU improves to 3-3.
To start the first half, VCU took an 11-4 lead before the Greyhounds scored a field goal at 13:28. Krsytle Harrington made a steal and went coast to coast for the 11-6 score. The Rams continued to work the ball offensively while the Greyhounds struggled to take a 36-20 half-time lead.
VCU took a 21-point lead early in the second before Loyola went on a 7-0 run to cut that lead to 14 and a 41-27 score. The Greyhounds went 5-for-6 from the line with two free throws from Brittany Dunn and two from Meghan Wood as well as one free throw and a basket by Scherle. Meagan Evans scored back-to-back baskets for the Rams to set the score at 45-27 before the Greyhounds put together back-to-back baskets by Harrington and Tynisha Davis to cut the lead again to 14, 45-31 at 11:59. Loyola never got any closer for the 67-46 final.
Scherle led Loyola with 10 points and six rebounds. Harrington followed with seven points and four assists.
VCU was led by Cosel who shot 4-for-6 from the field including 3-for-3 from behind the arc. Vera Christova followed with 10 points.
The Greyhounds outrebounded the Rams 41-37 and outshot them from the charity stripe (80%-63%) while the Rams outshot Loyola from the field (46%-24.1%).
Loyola next travels to Wake Forest to play on Tuesday, December 21 at 11:00 a.m.
