George Washington Edges Women's Basketball, 56-50
Dec. 9, 2013
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Juniors Nai Brown and Kara Marshall contributed 32 of Loyola University Maryland’s 50 points in a 56-50 loss at George Washington University Monday night at the Charles E. Smith Center.
Brown recorded the first double-double of her career, scoring 22 points and 11 rebounds. The junior guard shot a career-high 8-17 from the floor, tying her career-best at the charity stripe.
Brown pulled the game within three with less than 30 seconds remaining in the game, and gave Loyola the final one-possession opportunity.
Loyola (2-7) tallied its sixth contest decided by six points or less, while George Washington improved to 5-4 on the year.
With 16:27 remaining in regulation, the Colonials recorded their largest lead of the game after Caira Washington capped off her seven-point run, 36-27.
Washington’s run lasted five minutes until Brown’s and-one opportunity at 13:37 halted the Washington offensive spark.
Moments later, Offodile found success on the other end of the court, forcing a George Washington turnover with just over a minute left. Coming out of a team timeout, Marshall scored the final field goal of the contest, 53-48, with 44 seconds remaining.
Loyola’s bench outscored George Washington’s, 12-7, led by Perry and senior Nicole Krusen with six points each.
In the first half, Krusen gave Loyola its third and final tie of the contest just minutes into the matchup. Following a 10-0 run by Brown, Krusen’s three-point field goal knotted the score 15-15. From that point on both teams continued to exchange baskets. Megan Nipe went on to score six uncontested points to send George Washington into the locker room with an eight-point favor, 31-23.
Offodile recorded two blocks to add to a career total 64. After Monday night’s performance, Offodile passed Sherika Wilson for sixth place on the all-time blocks list at Loyola. Wilson recorded 63 blocks from 1998-01.
Loyola takes the week to study and prepare for finals, before returning back to action on Saturday, Dec. 21 for a Greyhound double-header. The women will take on cross-town rival, UMBC, at noon from Reitz Arena.
