Women's Basketball Falls to Niagara, 72-64

Ngara University, N.Y. - Niagara University shot 15-of-20 from the free throw line en route to a 72-64 victory over Loyola in women's basketball action Sunday afternoon at Gallagher Center. The Greyhounds fall to 1-4 overall and 1-1 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play while the Purple Eagles improve to 4-3 overall and 2-0 in the conference.

The Greyhounds opened the contest with intensity, going on a 7-1 run and not allowing a Niagara field goal until 17:26. Niagara battle back from that deficit to tie the game at 11 and take the lead on a pair of free throws by Shaunna Ambrose at 13:14. The squads tied once more at 16 before Loyola took a brief lead on back to back baskets, one from Katie Scherle and the second from Krystle Harrington for a 20-19 score at 5:59. Niagara reclaimed the lead on the following play while the Greyhounds continued to hang on, narrowing that lead to one twice before Niagara scored the final five points of half for the 35-29 score.

In the second half, Niagara built up as much as a 14-point lead on a layup by Eva Cunnghanm for a 51-37 score at 13:02. Loyola stayed in the game however, bringing the lead into single digits for much of the rest of the half. The Loyola defense kept the Greyhounds in the contest. Jill Glessner made a defensive play at 1:40 and passed the ball ahead to Meghan Wood for the basket at 1:38 and a 64-58 score. On the next play, Harrington came up with the steal to go coast to coast and cut the lead to four, 64-60 at 1:11. Niagara'a Michelle Manfredi went 2-for-2 from the line to put the Purple Eagles back up six before Scherle hit a layup with thirty seconds left to bring the score back to 66-62. The Purple Eagles went to the line three more times over the next 30 seconds, hitting all six shots to seal the win. Wood added the last basket for Loyola and for the 72-64 final.

Niagara finished the contest hitting 15-of-20 from the line to Loyola's 3-of-6 effort. The Greyhounds outrebounded Niagara 38-35 and outshot the Purple Eagles 46.2% to 44.6%.

Loyola was led by Wood's career-high 14 points. It was the second consecutive career-high point total and the second consecutive game she led her squad in scoring. She was followed by Scherle with 13 points and nine rebounds. Glessner added 11 points, seven rebounds and six assists.

Niagara was led by Ambrose with 19 points. She was followed by Chanteele Wilson with 16, including a 4-for-6 effort from three-point range. Toni Smalley added 12 points and Eva Cunningham finished with 11.

Loyola is back in action Thursday, December 9 at Howard.
