Second-Half Run Pushes Women's Basketball Past Lehigh
Dec. 3, 2012
BALTIMORE - Loyola University Maryland shot 53.8-percent from the field in the second half and used a 22-0 run that covered more than six minutes to beat visiting Lehigh University, 60-48, on Monday night in non-conference action at Reitz Arena.
Kerry Kinek made Lehigh's lead 31-26 with a three at 17:48, but Katie Sheahin hit a turnaround jumper at the right elbow on Loyola's next possession, sparking a 22-0 run that would culminate on a Nicole Krusen three with 11:23 left.
The run was propelled as much by defense as good ball movement. The Greyhounds (4-4 overall) as four steals and a blocked shot during the stretch, and they had five assists on nine baskets.
Sheahin hit two jumpers in similar fashion to start the run, and Kara Marshall hit 1-of-2 from the foul line. Another Sheahin bucket, this on a drive that she finished with a banked runner, led to a Nneka Offodile layup followed by two Krusen free throws.
Marshall pulled down an Alyssa Sutherland 3-point miss and laid it off the glass for two, and Sutherland then stole the ensuing inbound pass. She fed Krusen for a fast-break layup, and the Greyhounds were up 10, 41-31.
A Sheahin steal in half-court defense led to another Krusen layup, and Sutherland then scored a basket to make it a 14-point Greyhounds advantage before Krusen's capping three that made the score 48-31 with
Lehigh (2-5) made a run of its own, pulling within 10, 53-43, on two Marybeth Egan with 4:12 to play.
Diana Logan, who matched her career-high with 10 points, scored the next four points for Loyola, two on a jumper in the lane and two on a pair of free throws, and Offodile scored on a layup out of a Greyhounds' timeout to push the Loyola advantage back to 16, 59-43, with 2:09 left.
Sheahin led the Greyhounds, and tied for game-high honors with 19 points. She also had four steals, three assists, three blocked shots and zero turnovers in the game.
Three other Loyola players, in addition to Sheahin and Logan, scored eight or more. Krusen tallied nine, and Offodile and Marshall each had eight. Offodile led Loyola with seven rebounds.
Trailing 11-7 with just over 11 minutes to play in the first half, Loyola hit 3-pointers in five of its next seven possessions, and the Greyhounds led 22-15 with 7:28 on the clock when Katie Sheahin splashed her third trey during that stretch.
Lehigh, however, would score the next five points and after a Sheahin free throw at 5:35, neither team would score for more than three minutes.
Becky Guman snapped that drought for the Mountain Hawks, hitting a 24-foot three from the top right to tie the game at 23-23 with 2:24 on the clock. A Kelly Peterson triple with 37 ticks left before the break pushed Lehigh back in front.
Alyssa Sutherland made 1-of-2 at the line 22 seconds later, but Elizabeth Sharlow converted on a spinning layup with less than a second remaining before the break, and Lehigh was up, 28-24, at halftime.
Kinek had a double-double to lead Lehigh with 19 points and 13 rebounds, but no other Mountain Hawk scored in double figures.
Loyola is back in action on Wednesday night when it takes on the University of Pittsburgh in the Steel City.
