Women's Basketball Defeats American In Afternoon Matchup

BALTIMORE, Md. - Kara Marshall and Katie Sheahin combined for 35 points, to help the Loyola University Maryland women’s basketball team (3-4) defeat American University, 55-53, Saturday afternoon in Reitz Arena.
Sheahin recorded a season-high 22 points, grabbing nine rebounds, three assists, one block, and three steals. Marshall posted 13 points, one block, and two steals.
American (2-4) scored the first points of the game, but seconds later, Marshall went from underneath the basket, to record the first layup and points for the Greyhounds.
Loyola trailed by two only five minutes into the half, but Sheahin found Alyssa Sutherland on the right base line for a Greyhound three-pointer. The senior’s three gave Loyola a one-point lead, 7-6.
The Eagles would eventually recover the lead, after a pair of Jen Dumiak possessions.
Marshall tied the game 17-17, after two successful tries from the charity stripe.
Loyola led at halftime, 20-19, after a Sheahin three-pointer with five seconds left in the first half.
After the break, Marshall returned with a repeat performance, recording a layup, and the first points of the half for the Greyhounds.
Both teams battled it out on the hardwood, but American would gain the lead a minute and thirty seconds into the second half, after a Dumiak three pointer.
The Greyhounds gained momentum, and began to chisel away at the Eagles’ lead, after Marshall connected on a three from the baseline, that danced around the rim before making it through the net.
Sheahin tied up the score with eight minutes left to play in regulation, but it was freshman Diana Logan that would launch the Greyhound lead, 42-39.
Loyola recorded their largest lead of the afternoon, 55-42, after a pair of Marshall free throws.
The Greyhounds were 18-24 from the line, out shooting the Eagles 57.1-75 percent.
American’s Alexis Dobbs would shorten the deficit, after a pair of successful three-pointers, ending the game, 55-53, in favor of the Greyhounds.
Sheahin and junior Nneka Offodile led Loyola with nine rebounds apiece, while classmates Sutherland and Sheahin recorded a team high three steals.
After Saturday’s game, the Greyhounds are 3-0 in afternoon contests.
The Greyhounds will be back in Reitz Arena, Monday Dec. 3, to host the Lehigh University Mountain Hawks. Tip-off begins at 7 p.m.
