Women's Basketball Loses A Hard-Fought Battle To Howard

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Despite a strong second half effort, the Loyola University Maryland women's basketball team fell to the Howard Lady Bison 40-37, Wednesday night in Burr Gymnasium. 

Senior Alyssa Sutherland posted the lone double-digit score for the Greyhounds (2-4), recording 11 points, five rebounds, and two assists.

Howard (3-4) took the first possession of the game, as Jerrelle Gorham connected on a three-pointer sending the score 3-0.  Gorham scored 12 points for the Lady Bison, posting 9 in the first half alone.

Twenty seconds after Gorham posted the first points of the game, senior Katie Sheahin made a jumper for the Greyhounds, elevating the score 3-2.

Howard extended their lead by seven, with just under 11 minutes left to play in the first half, but it was freshman Tiffany Padgett who connected on a three-pointer, sending the score 12-8 , in favor of the Lady Bison.

With only a minute left in the half, Nicole Krusen scored her twelfth three-pointer of the season, but it was not enough to hold off the Lady Bison, as the Greyhounds entered halftime 23-17. 

In the first half, the Lady Bison recorded nine offensive rebounds to Loyola's four.

The Greyhounds came out strong after the break, holding Howard to only five points in the first six minutes.

Sophomore Kara Marshall scored seven points in the second half, helping the Greyhound cut away at the Howard lead.

With ten minutes left in the second period, Marshall connected on two from the charity stripe, while moments later Sutherland would force a Bison turnover, ultimately sending rookie Tiffany Padgett to the line for two.


 

 

The Greyhounds connected on 70 percent of their free throws, while the Bison only went 7-18.

With less than three minutes left in regulation, Loyola tightened the deficit to three, as Sheahin scored two points from the free-throw line.  One minute later, Marshall made a three-pointer from downtown to tighten the score 39-37 Lady Bison.

Loyola held Howard to only four offensive rebounds in the second half.

The Lady Bison were unsuccessful from behind the arc in the second half, shooting 0-4, while Marshall helped the Greyhounds connecting on one from downtown.

Loyola dominated in the paint recording 12, to Howard's six.

The Greyhounds will be back in Reitz Arena Saturday, Dec. 1, for a 2 p.m. matchup against the American Eagles.
