Navy Holds Off Women's Basketball Second Half Push
Nov. 20, 2012
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Senior Alyssa Sutherland poured in a season-high 14 points, but the Loyola University Maryland women's basketball team fell to Navy Tuesday night in Alumni Hall.
Fellow classmate Katie Sheahin posted her fourth-consecutive double-digit score of the season, but the Greyhounds (1-3)could not sustain a lead, as the Midshipmen (2-2) maintained control of the lead for the entire 40 minutes.
Navy put the first six points on the board as Kara Pollinger and Audrey Bauer hit three's with less than two minutes into regulation.
The Greyhound defense returned strong after the break, holding Navy to two points within the first ten minutes of the second half. Loyola held Navy to one jumper, as the Mids missed ten of their 11 shots after halftime. The Greyhound's 15-2 run would not last long, as Navy's Alix Membreno would sink a three from downtown to help change the momentum for the Mids.
Sutherland returned and tabbed her sole steal of the night, leading to a fast break layup, which left the Greyhounds down by less than ten, with only three minutes left in the half.
With 13 seconds left in regulation, grad student Candice Walker recorded her second three-point goal of the season, but the basket would not be enough, as Navy finished with the final possession and victory.
Sutherland, Sheahin, and Krusen all recorded double-digit points, while sophomore Steph Smith led Loyola with 5 rebounds
