Women's Basketball Falls to Wake Forest, 66-51, in Season Opener
Nov. 21, 2003
BALTIMORE, MD - Wake Forest used a late second-half surge to pull away from Loyola College, 66-51, in women's basketball action Friday night at Reitz Arena. Friday was the season opener for both squads.
The first half was a close battle of defensive play with a 18-17 Wake Forest lead with 7:22 left on the clock. The Demon Deacons Tonia Brown scored five points in a 9-2 run to put Wake up eight, their largest lead of the half with 4:54 remaining before Loyola whittled that lead to four (29-25) at the half behind the efforts of Lindsay Cobb.
The Greyhounds came out of the locker room strong, taking a quick lead on a jumper by Krystal Harrington and three-pointer by Kerri-Lynn Orsini for a 30-29 Loyola lead at 18:22. The two teams went back and forth for the next several minutes before Loyola tied the game up with a three from Lauren Troupe at 17:13. But Wake would control much of the game from there on out, taking as much as an 18 point lead in a foul laden second half.
Loyola committed just six fouls in the first 20 minutes of play compared to the Demon Deacons 11 but the second half was another story with Wake registering another 11 fouls and the Greyhounds committing 15. Loyola shot 15-for-24 from the free-throw line to Wake's 18-for-29, both at 62%. It was a different story from the floor with the 'Hounds shooting just 29.3% to Wake's 42.3%.
Loyola was led by 2003 MAAC Rookie of the Year, Katie Scherle with 15 points and nine rebounds. She was followed by Harrington with 10 points.
Wake's Brown was the game's scoring leader with 16 points and nine boards and was followed by Liz Strunk with 11 and Kelia Evans with 10.
The Greyhounds will travel to Bucknell University on Tuesday, November 25 for a 7:00 game.
