Women's Basketball Earns First Win With 72-62 Victory Over Howard
Nov. 20, 2013
BALTIMORE - The Loyola University Maryland women's basketball team used a 17-7 run early in the second half to earn its first win of the season Wednesday night, beating Howard University, 72-62, at Reitz Arena.
Kara Marshall and Nai Brown led Loyola (1-3) with 14 points each, while Lisa Mirarchi chipped in a career-high 13. Marshall also led all players with five assists and Nneka Offodile had a game-high eight rebounds.
Both teams tied, 29-29, going into the locker, but the Greyhounds took a quick second half lead, using a 17-7 run capped off by a Mirarchi layup with 13:25 remaining in regulation.
The large offensive run included four three-point field goals by Marshall, Brown, Mirarchi and senior Nicole Krusen.
Loyola did not let go of the lead for the remainder of the game, as Howard shot 50-percent from the field and only 17-percent from behind the arc.
Coming out of a timeout, Howard (2-2) made two consecutive layups to put the Bison within five, but sophomore Jeneh Perry countered if with her own and one opportunity to keep the Greyhounds ahead by seven.
The two teams continued to swap point, going to the free throw line five times within the next minute.
Howard’s Cheyenne Brown brought the Bison within three on a jumper with less than eight minutes remaining, but Loyola maintained control of the score with a pair of Mirarchi and Tiffany Padgett layups.
Padgett made back-to-back trips to the basket, with a wide-open layup thanks to a strong offensive effort, which put the Greyhounds up by eight with only 3:25 to go.
A pair of Krusen free throws gave Loyola its largest lead of the contest, 72-60, before Howard scored its final layup with two seconds remaining.
The Greyhounds shot a season-high 45-percent from the field, while Mirarchi and Krusen hit 100-percent of their free throw attempts Wednesday night.
Howard’s Victoria Gonzalez led all scorers with 18 points, while going 6-8 from three-point range.
Loyola maintains its home court advantage, hosting the University of Pittsburgh on Saturday, Nov. 23 at 1 p.m.
