Women's Basketball Drops Home Opener To Hartford, 59-53
Nov. 14, 2013
BALTIMORE - The Loyola University Maryland women’s basketball team dropped its home opener to Hartford University Thursday evening at Reitz Arena.
The Greyhounds took immediate offensive possession at the sound of the tipoff horn. Padgett controlled the tip, which ultimately led to the 2-0 from a Nicole Krusen layup.
Sophomore Brittany Butler showed resilience on the defense, tipping the ball in the Hawks’ territory, and sending offensive possession back to the Greyhounds.
With 13:46 remaining in the first half, Hartford’s Cherelle Moore made a pair of free throws to help the Hawks to an 11-0 run, but one minute later sophomore Diana Logan connected on a jumper to put the Greyhounds within eight.
Hartford (1-1) took its largest lead of the contest after a set of free throws by Alyssa Englert, sending the score 21-10 with eight minutes remaining.
Senior Nneka Offodile countered Hartford’s lead by sparking a 7-0 Loyola run in the 12th minute. Offodile and freshman Lisa Mirarchi scored three consecutive charity stripe points, followed by a Jeneh Perry layup and two additional Mirarchi free throws.
With just over 30 seconds remaining in the first half, Krusen connected on her lone three-point field goal of the contest to put the Greyhounds within four, 27-23 at the half.
During the first 20 minutes, the lead changed a total of three times, while the score was tied once in the first four minutes.
Loyola came back from the half energized and ready to score. Junior Kara Marshall sparked the offense with a shot from behind the arc, which cut the Hawks’ deficit to three with 19 minutes remaining.
Five minutes later, Padgett made back-to-back layups to get within two, the closest Loyola would get for the remainder of the matchup.
Hartford took its largest lead of the half, after an Amber Bepko three-point field goal with 5:23 remaining. The eight-point Greyhound deficient wouldn’t last long, as Brown found the layup after a Tiffany Padgett offensive rebound.
The score continued to seesaw, as both teams went to the line 16 times in the final five minutes.
Hartford had three players in double figures, led by Deanna Mayza with 20 points. The Hawks shot 31.8-percent from three-point range, as compared to 28-percent from the floor.
Mirarchi shot one hundred percent from the charity stripe for the second game in a row, leading Loyola’s bench with eight points. The rookie guard also recorded a game-high four steals, a new personal-record for the freshman. Also in back-to-back performances, Perry set a new career-high, grabbing seven rebounds against the Hawks.
Brown scored nine of her 14 points in the second, making five free throws and two field goals.
The Greyhounds will return to action on Sunday when they head to East Carolina for a 2 p.m., contest.
