COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Loyola University Maryland women's basketball team opened its season on Friday night with an 84-46 loss against No. 11/10 Maryland at the Comcast Center in College Park, Md.

Preseason All-MAAC First Team selection, Katie Sheahin led Loyola with 13 points and seven rebounds, while Maryland's Alyssa Thomas led all scorers with 20 points.

Loyola (0-1, 0-0 MAAC) had three freshmen make their debuts in the contest, with Kara Marshall, Nai Brown and Steph Smith all playing significant minutes.

Maryland (1-0, 0-0 ACC) led by as many as 18 in the first half and took a 40-25 advantage into the locker room at halftime. Thomas led all scorers with 14 points in the first 20 minutes.

The Terrapins, who were picked to finish third in the ACC, started the game on an 8-0 run over the first 2:24, but Loyola responded quickly, cutting the deficit back to one after scoring seven straight points. Candice Walker had five of those, scoring the first two of the season for the Greyhounds and then capped the run with a three-pointer from the corner.

After Maryland claimed a 34-16 with 3:26 remaining in the first half on a Thomas jumper,  the Greyhounds went on a 9-2 run over the next 2:38 to close within 11. Katie Sheahin had four points, hitting a pair of free throws and a jumper.

Marshall also contributed during the run, making a steal in the backcourt and finishing a lay-up to put the score at 36-25 with just under a minute remaining.

Sheahin led Loyola with nine points and five rebounds at the half, while Walker had five and Marshall added four. Both teams pulled down 15 rebounds in the frame, while Loyola shot 40-percent from the field compared to 50-percent for Maryland.

The Terps came out in the second half and scored the first eight points to put the score at 48-27 with 16:27 remaining. Nneka Offodile ended the run with a jumper from the right baseline for Loyola's first points of the second half.

The Terrapins used a balance attack in the second half, with nine different players scoring. The team was 16-32 from the floor and finished shooting 50-percent for the game.
