WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The Loyola University Maryland women's basketball team, despite a strong second-half effort, fell to Hartford University, 64-50, in the season opener.

The Greyhounds put the first points on the board by sophomore Kara Marshall, but the two-point lead would not last long, as it would be the only lead Loyola would see during the forty minutes.

Hartford would set the pace for the remainder of the game, as Nikkia Smith made two baskets from the paint, to help the Hawks lead 11-4, only four minutes into the game.

Going into the half, the Greyhounds trailed by 14, but the deficit would shorten, as Loyola came out strong in the second half.

The Greyhounds held the Hawks to only one point in five minutes. Marshall, senior guard Katie Sheahin, and Stephanie Smith all posted defensive rebounds during the span.

Both teams had two players posting double digits in scoring. Sheahin, the MAAC Preseason Player of the Year, totaled the game-high with 16 points and four steals. Marshall scored 12 points on the board, making 4-of-7 from the field.

Daphne Elliot and Amber Bepko posted 14 and 12 points, respectively, for Hartford.

The Greyhounds will be back in Reitz Arena on Sunday, November 11, to host the Maryland Terrapins in the 2012-13 home opener.
