BU Pushes Past WBB In First Round Of PL Championships
March 4, 2014
BOSTON - Loyola University Maryland sophomore Tiffany Padgett recorded her second double-double of the season, but it was not enough for the 10th-seeded Greyhounds as they fell, 40-35, to the No. 7 seed Boston University Terriers, in the first round of the Patriot League Championships.
Padgett went 2-of-6 from behind the arc, hitting 100-percent of her free-throw attempts.
Rashidat Agboola scored 12 points, grabbed 16 rebounds and recorded five blocks, to lead Boston University on to the Patriot League Championship Quarterfinals on Thursday, March 6, facing the United States Military Academy in West Point, N.Y.
With four and a half minutes left in the first half, the Terriers held a seven-point advantage, 22-15, before Padgett sparked a 13-3 run that included threes by Padgett and senior Nicole Krusen. During the run Loyola forced two turnovers and capitalized on five missed field goals by Boston University. The Greyhounds entered the locker room with three-point advantage, 28-25.
Both teams struggled to find offensive rhythm in the second half, scoring a combined 22 points in the final 20 minutes.
Back-to-back baskets by BU gave the Terriers a slight three-point lead, 31-28, with 13:31 left to play. Over the next six minutes both teams traded baskets, with the Terriers holding a slight one-point lead on every Loyola counter. Diana Logan’s jumper at 7:21 was the last field goal for the Greyhounds.
Boston University went on to score five of the last six points, ultimately taking the final five-point victory.
In addition to Padgett’s 14 points, Krusen had six points and Perry chipped in five. Freshman Lisa Mirarchi led the team in assists for the 21st time this season, helping her teammates on three separate occasions.
