Buffalo, N.Y. - Rider's Becky Hower hit a three with one second left on the clock to top Loyola 60-58 Thursday night in the first round of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference at the HSBC Arena. The Greyhounds, the sixth seed in the tournament, end the season with a 10-18 record while the Broncs, the ninth seed, improve to 9-19.

Loyola started the contest with 6-0 run while holding Rider scoreless for over five minutes until Becky Hower hit a three at 14:55 for a 6-3 mark. Jackie Valderas went 2-for-2 from the charity stripe and Jill Glessner added jumper to give the Greyhounds a more comfortable 10-3 lead with 13:31 left to play. Hower hit her second three at 12:58 and Tami Coyle hit two free throws for a 10-8 Loyola advantage with 11:48 left in the half. Lauren Troupe hit 1-of-2 free throws for the 11-8 mark at 9:54. Both teams began attacking the basket for a 15-12 score with 6:44 on the clock. Jackie Valderas continued that trend with her layup off a pass from Glessner for the 17-12 score at 6:24. Meghan Wood extended the lead to 19-12 with her layup at 5:41. Rider's Jen Towers broke up Loyola's scoring, completing a three-point play. Wood continued her efforts with two free throws after being fouled on an offensive board. Towers did the same at Rider's end for the 21-17 Loyola lead at 4:36. Katie Scherle and Glessner gave Loyola a 25-17 lead with a basket each. Rider score the next seven straight points to cut Loyola's lead to 27-6 with 20 seconds left on the clock. Valderas gave the Greyhounds more breathing room with a layup to close the half with the score set at 29-26.

The score was tied three times early in the second half before Krystle Harrington and Wood. The two scored the next 12 straight Greyhound points to give Loyola a 46-41 lead with 7:34 left to play. Wood also added two rebounds, a block, a steal and an assist in that time. Brittany Dunn added to the led, 48-41 before the Broncs put together a 12-2 run to claim their first lead, 53-50 with 3:36 on the clock. Ebony Toliver hit a jump shot to cut the lead to 53-51. Hower went to the free throw line, hitting both shots to return the Broncs lead to three, 55-52 with 2:30 left. Valderas crashed the boards on Loyola's next shot and got the second chance basket to go for the 55-54 Rider lead with two minutes left. Rider's Kara Borel answered that basket before Harrington went to the free throw line for the Greyhounds to again bring Loyola within one, 57-56 with 1:10 on the clock. Wood continued to work, scoring a second chance basket to give Loyola the lead, 58-57 with 28 ticks left. After a Rider timeout, Glessner nabbed a defensive board and called a Greyhound time. Valderas was fouled on the in-bounds play and Rider again called time. Valderas didn't convert the free throw. Rider gained possession under the Loyola basket. The Broncs got the inbounds to Hower who's three as time ran down shocked the crowd, giving Rider the win, 60-58.

 

 

Loyola was led by Valderas with a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds. Harrington followed with 13 points, shooting 5-for-10 from the floor. Wood added 10 off the bench in addition to six rebounds. Scherle added eight points and 11 rebounds.

Hower was the lone Broncs in double figures with 15 points, including three three point baskets. Coyle added nine off the bench and Hall recorded eight points.

The Greyhounds held a staggering 47-28 advantage on the boards while Rider shot 90.5% from the free-throw line to Loyola's 63.2%. The Broncs hit 12-of 14-in the second half while was just 5-for-10.
