Women's Basketball Closes Out Regular Season On Senior Day
March 1, 2014
BALTIMORE - The United States Naval Academy had four stretches in the first half where it outscored Loyola University Maryland by 12 or more, as the Midshipmen defeated the Greyhounds, 74-50, Saturday afternoon on Senior Day.
Senior Nneka Offodile scored Loyola’s first basket of the afternoon after she and classmate Nicole Krusen were recognized prior to the contest for their contributions on and off the court over the last four years.
Excluding Offodile’s layup, Navy (23-6, 15-3) scored the first 14 points of the game, leading 14-2 when Alix Membreno scored on a fast break and-one opportunity with 14:51 left in the first half.
Sophomore Jeneh Perry cut the deficit to 10 with her own layup, before Navy took its largest lead of the half, 21-4, with 12:25 remaining.
Post players Offodile, Perry and Tiffany Padgett kept Navy scoreless for over four minutes, using baskets in back-to-back possessions to pull within 11, 21-10. Coming out of the under eight minute media timeout, Padgett hit the first Loyola three-pointer of the afternoon and made it a 9-0 run for the Greyhounds.
The Midshipmen countered with their own three, 24-13, before sophomore Diana Logan became the first guard to score a Loyola basket and pull within nine.
Over the next five and a half minutes Logan and Perry combined for the remainder of the Greyhounds’ first half points. Loyola entered the locker room with momentum after an and-one scoring drive by Logan made it a 10-point game, 33-23.
In the second half, Loyola (5-24, 2-16) got within eight on a Padgett three-point field goal, but that was as close as it would draw the remainder of the game.
Perry finished with a career-high 17 points, grabbing a game-best nine rebounds.
Padgett added 12 points and Lisa Mirarchi led Loyola with four assists.
Loyola’s bigs combined for 35 of the Greyhounds’ 50 points.
Following Saturday’s matchup Loyola took the Patriot League’s No. 10 seed. The Greyhounds will take on No. 7 Boston University on Tuesday, March 4 at 7 p.m. from Case Gym.
