Seniors Lead WBB To Win Over Fairfield On Senior Day
March 1, 2013
Sutherland tied a career-high with a season-best 18-points, while Sheahin chipped in her seventh career double-double, and second of the season, with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore Kara Marshall also reached double-figures in scoring, tallying 11.
Sutherland scored eight of the Greyhounds first ten points, giving Loyola its first lead of the contest. The two teams went back and forth posting points on alternating possessions, before Marshall made back-to-back jumpers to extend the Greyhound lead to four. Sheahin made two uncontested field goals before the Stags would counter with a Katie Cizynski jumper.
Cizynski led Fairfield with 14 points, and 14 rebounds, going 7-11 from the floor.
The Greyhounds held a 12-minute lead before Cizynski gave Fairfield a 21-20 advantage, but two minutes later Sheahin put Loyola back on the board with a three-point field goal from the top of the arc. The Greyhounds entered the locker with a two-point lead, 23-21.
At the half, the two teams were neck and neck, tied in paint and bench points.
Fairfield (17-11, 11-6 MAAC) knotted the score with the first basket of the second half, but a half-court steal by Sheahin led to a Sutherland layup that gave Loyola the final push to retain the remaining lead.
The three seniors sparked an 8-0 run that ultimately led to Loyola’s largest lead of the contest, 12 points, off a Sheahin jumper with just over 11 minutes remaining in regulation.
On two separate occasions the Stags made back-to-back three-point field goals to cut away at the deficit, but the Greyhounds contested with following possession points to maintain the lead.
Walker grabbed a season-high five rebounds, while Marshall and Sheahin both helped the team with four assists each.
Sutherland recorded a game-high two steals to end her career in Reitz Arena.
The Greyhounds (11-17, 6-11) will conclude the regular season on Sunday with a game at Saint Peter's. Tip off is set for 2 p.m.
