Women's Basketball Falls To Marist On Women's In Sports Day

BALTIMORE - The Loyola University Maryland women's basketball team fell to Marist, 79-55, Sunday afternoon at Reitz Arena on Women In Sports Day.
Kara Marshall led all Greyhounds in scoring with 12 points, while Alyssa Sutherland knocked in 11 and Nneka Offodile chipped in 10.
Marist (21-6, 16-0 MAAC) started the contest with a 7-0 run before Marshall put the Greyhounds on the scoreboard, 7-1, with a single free throw. Marshall and Offodile scored the first seven points for Loyola, before the Red Foxes went on a 9-0 run with under 11 minutes remaining in the first half.
Rookie Tiffany Padgett halted the Red Foxes run, but the red and white countered taking their largest lead of the half, with 18 points off a Leanne Ockenden layup.
Loyola (10-17, 5-11) scored on the next two possessions, cutting the deficit to 14.
As the seconds ticked away on the shot clock, Sutherland sank a deep three-point field goal, 27-16, with 6:34 left in the half. The senior’s basket was the only three pointer of the half.
Sophomore Steph Smith came from under the basket to help Loyola to a halftime score of 24-37.
In the first half, the Greyhounds shot 71 percent from the charity stripe, while Marist only connected on five of its eight shots from the line. The Red Foxes scored 13 points off turnovers, while leading in the paint 17-12.
Loyola wasted no time returning to the second half, as Sutherland made her second three-point shot of the evening, a right side baseline shot less than 20 seconds into the action.
Marist countered with a Casey Dulin three-point shot, but junior Nicole Krusen replied with back-to-back three’s for the green and grey. The Greyhounds got within nine points, but another Red Foxes basket from behind the arc gave Marist a double-digit lead. Five of the first six shots of the second half were three-point field goals by both teams.
Dulin capped off a quick 6-0 Marist run with another Red Foxes three pointer. The guard led all scorers Sunday afternoon with 20 points. Three other Red Foxes recorded double-digit scores, including Elizabeth Beynnon, Sydney Coffey, and Kristina Danella.
Danella went 5-5 from the line, connecting on three-consecutive free throws to extend the Marist lead, 42-64, with 10:38 remaining in regulation.
The two teams went back and forth over the next four minutes, but the Greyhounds could not get within less than 20, as Marist took its largest lead, 79-53, with just under a minute left in action.
Freshman Diana Logan added the final effort for the Greyhounds, but the last minute layup could not hold off the 24 point Marist lead.
Sutherland grabbed a game-high three steals, tabbing four assists against the Red Foxes.
Loyola (10-17, 5-11) will be back in action on Friday, March 1 when it hosts Fairfield on Senior Day. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
