Daugherty Three Not Enough To Push WBB Past Colgate In Overtime
Feb. 23, 2014
BALTIMORE - Freshman Lauren Daugherty's buzzer-beater three to send the game into overtime was not enough to hold off the Colgate University Raiders, 67-65, on Sunday for Women In Sports Day.
Colgate (7-20 overall, 3-13 Patriot League) led by 15, 41-26, on a Catherine Lewis layup with 11:58 remaining, but Nai Brown responded with three-consecutive layups of her own to pull within nine, 41-32, at 10:01.
Brown led all scorers and tabbed her third-career double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore Diana Logan scored a career-high 13 points, while Mirarchi added 10 points and five assists.
The Greyhounds' (5-22, 2-14) first three-point field goal of the contest came at the 9:32 mark, when senior Nicole Krusen cut the deficit to 43-35. The three-point splash down sparked a 7-1 run, including baskets by Logan and Mirarchi to make it a five-point game, but Kelly Reid scored on a lyaup at 7:12, 46-39, still in favor of the Raiders.
Krusen hit her second three with 6:25 on the clock, pulling within three for over two minutes. Neither team could find the back of the net, until five straight-points by Carole Harris put Colgate back on the scoreboard.
Logan responded with her own three, making it once again a five-point contest until Mirarchi received her second foul of the afternoon, and Mariah Jones made both of her shots from the free-throw line.
Over the next two minutes Loyola went to the line six times, adding five more points to the team total. The Greyhounds pulled within two on a pair of Nneka Offodile free throws, 55-53, with just under a minute remaining.
After Colgate missed its second free-throw attempt with 47-seconds remaining, Logan grabbed the rebound. With the ball and thirty seconds left to play, Brown took the jumper and missed, grabbing the offensive board to keep possession. The Greyhounds' called a timeout, and came back from the break to score a layup, 56-55.
Brown fouled Missy Repoli on the following in-bound play with only seconds remaining on the shot clock. Repoli made both charity stripe baskets and gave the Raiders a slight edge, 58-55.
Down by three with less than a second remaining in regulation Mirarchi found Daugherty open at the top of the key. The classmates made the exchange and the three-point basket made its way into the hoop as the buzzer sounded and the crowd got on their feet.
In the second half, Loyola outscored Colgate, 36-27. During that time, the Greyhounds shot 13-of-30 from the field and 4-of-8 from behind the arc.
In the extra period, Loyola led by as much as six on a Daugherty layup, 65-59, but the Raiders scored eight unanswered points to pull away with the ultimate victory.
Randyll Butler led Colgate with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
Loyola scored 60-plus points for the first time in three weeks, shooting 37-percent from the field overall and 50-percent in the second half.
Mirarchi grabbed a game-high three steals, contributing for half of the team's six recorded thefts.
Loyola matched a season-high, grabbing 43 rebounds.
The Greyhounds travel to Worcester, Mass., for their final road game of the regular season on Wednesday, Feb. 26. Loyola and College of the Holy Cross are scheduled to tipoff at 7 p.m.
