Iona Rallies Past Women's Basketball
Feb. 22, 2013
NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - A three-point field goal by Alyssa Sutherland put the Greyhounds down by two, but after two trips to the free throw line Loyola University Maryland fell to the Iona College Gaels, 67-61, in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play.
The Greyhounds came close on four separate occasions, knotting the score in the Hynes Athletic Center.
Steph Smith tied the score 10-10, after a Sheahin steal led to an open Smith in the paint. Moments later Smith added two more, 15-14, in favor of the Gaels.
The contest went scoreless for almost four minutes, until a Damika Martinez free throw 15 minutes into regulation. Offodile countered and tied the score 16-16, after a layup from Sutherland.
Five seconds before entering the locker room, Nicole Krusen sank a baseline basket to put the Greyhounds down by one, 22-21.
Loyola’s bench outscored the Gaels, 6-0, during the first 20 minutes while Iona capitalized on four fast breaks to the Greyhounds zero.
Coming out of the locker room, Iona went on a 12-0 run, connecting on three-three-point field goals, helping the Gaels to their first double-digit lead of the contest. Rookie Tiffany Padgett halted Iona’s run with an and-one play, 39-28, with 14:42 left to play. Nai Brown duplicated Padgett’s performance, adding three more points to Loyola’s effort.
The Greyhounds went on an 8-0 run, that was capped off by a Padgett jumper, 39-28. Loyola outscored Iona in the paint, 20-12.
Iona (15-11, 10-5 MAAC) led by as much as ten, with eight minutes remaining, after a Martinez jumper. The Gaels’s guard led all scorers with 22 points, while Joy Adams and Haley D’Angelo added 17 and 11, respectively.
A Sheahin fast break cut the deficit to eight, while Sutherland responded with a layup 53-47. In the next five minutes, the two teams went to the line twice, before Sutherland’s three put the Greyhounds down by two. The Gaels made four of their next four free-throw attempts, ultimately giving Iona the six-point advantage.
Iona made 21 trips to the line, connecting on 71 percent of the attempts. Loyola shot 88 percent from the charity stripe, going 7-8 Friday evening.
