Free-throws Push Niagara Past Women's Basketball

NIAGARA FALLS, NY - Niagara scored 48 points in the second half to overtake a 29-25 Loyola halftime lead to go on to win 73-59 at the Gallagher Center Friday night in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference contest. The No. 2 Purple Eagles improved to 17-8 overall and 11-5 in the conference while the Greyhounds fell to 11-13 on the season and 7-8 in the MAAC.
Loyola held the lead in much of the first half, getting ahead by as much as eight points for a 29-21 score with 6:37 remaining. Katie Scherle's efforts of eight straight points gave the Greyhounds the advantage. Niagara's Colleen Toetz hit a jump-shot as the clock ran down for the 29-25 mark at the half. Just five fouls were called in the first half, two assessed to Niagara and three to the Greyhounds.
In the second half, Niagara's Eva Cunningham took over scoring 20 of her 21 points. Cunningham brought NU within two with a three at 17:03 and next completed a three point play on the next Purple Eagle possession for their first lead of the game. Ann Mimm completed another three-point play on the next trip down the court for a 37-33 Niagara lead. The Purple Eagles couldn't score on its next two possessions and the Greyhounds took advantage with Jill Glessner nailing a jump shot and Katie Scherle setting up a three-point play of her own at 14:13 to reclaim the lead, 38-37. Niagara went on to shoot 17-for-18 from the free-throw line to close out the game.
The second half featured 21 fouls called. Niagara finished the game shooting 21-for-25 while Loyola shot just 6-for-12. The Purple Eagles out-rebounded the Greyhounds 33, 31 although Loyola outshot NU, 46% to 43%.
Loyola was led by Scherle with 15 points and seven rebounds while the freshman, Glessner scored a career-high of 12.
Cunningham finished with 21 and was tied by teammate Toetz. Mimm was also in double figures with 11. Sarah Heben pulled down a game-high 12 boards.
The Greyhounds will next visit Canisius on February 22 for a 2:00 game.
