Records Break As Women's Basketball Tops Manhattan
Feb. 15, 2013
BALTIMORE - Junior Nicole Krusen and the Loyola University Maryland women's basketball team broke two single-game records, as the Greyhounds topped the Manhattan College Jaspers, 54-34, at Play 4Kay night in Reitz Arena.
Krusen broke the record for the most three-point field goals made in a single contest, as the junior connected on seven shots from behind the arc. Meredith Tolley, who made six shots against Navy in 2009, held the previous record.
Krusen scored a career-high 21 points leading all scorers Friday night. Sophomore Nai Brown tabbed career-high points, recording 10, while Katie Sheahin and Tiffany Padgett led the rebounding effort with 11 and 10 rebounds, respectively.
Loyola (10-14, 5-8 MAAC) grabbed 58 rebounds, a new school record from the previous 56 boards against Rider University Feb. 5, 2003.
The Greyhounds took the lead less than two minutes into the first half, and refused to look back after a Sheahin free throw 3-2. Nneka Offodile extended the lead, 5-2, with a layup assisted by Alyssa Sutherland. The senior forward recorded six assists, along with sophomore guard Kara Marshall. Both Marshall and Sutherland tied their personal assist records Friday evening.
Krusen sunk the first three-point attempt of the night; with just over 15 minutes left in the first half. In the first 20 minutes, the junior made three of her four attempts from three-point range. The other two shots came one minute before halftime, as she connected on back-to-back baskets.
Krusen started the second half right were she left off in the first, making repeat performances from downtown. Loyola held a 30-18 lead over the Jaspers, as Krusen scored 15 of those 30 points.
Brown played off the success, making her second three-point shot of the game. The sophomore guard tied her career-high three-point field goals made in a single contest, the last occurring against the Syracuse Orange earlier in the season.
Krusen passed Tolley with her seventh shot from downtown, helping the Greyhounds to a 19-point lead. Moments later Loyola took the largest lead of the contest, after a Nneka Offodile layup, 52-27, with just under seven minutes.
Manhattan countered with a 7-0 run that was halted by a Diana Logan jumper in the paint.
The Jaspers (6-18, 3-10 MAAC) were led by Monica Roeder with 14 points and eight rebounds. Allison Skrec tallied five assists for Manhattan.
The Greyhounds head to Lawrenceville, N.J., as they take on Rider University Sunday, February 17 for an ESPN3 matchup. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m.
