Marist Battles Past Women's Basketball, 49-40
Feb. 12, 2005
Baltimore, Md. - In a cold shooting effort by both teams, Loyola fell to Marist, 49-40 in women's basketball action at Reitz Arena Saturday afternoon. The teams shot a combined 30.1% from the field and 47.2% from the charity stripe. Marist improves to 17-6 overall and extended their win streak to 11. The Red Foxes Metro Atlantic Athletic mark improves to 11-3. The Greyhounds fall to 7-15 overall and a 6-7 mark in the league.
Loyola led for much of the first half but both offenses had trouble getting a rhythm. The Greyhounds held a 6-4 advantage at 18:29 but both teams went three-minutes without scoring a point. Katie Scherle ended the drought at 15:36 for an 8-4 score but a three pointer and a 1-for-2 effort by Marist's Kristin Keller tied the game at eight with 12:52 left. Brittany Dunn gave Loyola back a lead with her basket at 12:32 but both teams would hit another scoring drought. Katie Scherle ended a four minute scoring drought with two free throws near the nine minute mark but a field goal was not scored until Marist's Fifi Camara got a second-chance basket to go at 7:24 for a 12-10 Loyola lead. Marist tied the contest two more times before it claimed a lead with a 6-0 run for a 18-14 score. The Greyhounds were diligent in the final minutes of the half however as they scored the only four points and held the Red Foxes' without a basket over the final 3:13 of the half for an 18-18 tie.
Marist escaped that tie early with four straight points from Megan Vetter to begin a 13-2 run over the first eight minutes of play for a 31-20 score. Loyola continued to fight to bring the deficit below double-digits for much of the half but a 9-for-11 effort by Marist from the charity stripe over the last 2:37 sealed the victory at 49-40.
Camara led Marist with a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds. Keller also added 17 points and seven rebounds while Alisa Kresge had a game-high of 11 boards, nine defensive.
The Greyhounds remain at home as they host Manhattan on Friday, February 18 at Reitz Arena. Tip-off is set for 7:00.
