Feb. 9, 2013
BUFFALO, N.Y. - The senior class of Katie Sheahin and Alyssa Sutherland combined for 64 percent of the scoring offense, as Loyola University Maryland fell to Canisius College, 48-39, at the Koessler Athletic Center.
Sheahin scored a game-high 13 points for Loyola (9-14, 4-8 MAAC), while Sutherland added 12. Tiffany Padgett led the rebounding effort, recording 14 boards and eight points.
The Greyhound defense came out strong in the first half, recording seven steals in the first 20 minutes. Padgett tabbed a block, and grabbed a team high eight points and seven rebounds in the first half alone.
The freshman center grabbed a fast break to tie the game, 12-12, going into the second media timeout.
Canisius (9-14, 6-6 MAAC) led by as much as five points, but Loyola came back within one after a bounce pass in the post from Sutherland to Padgett, setting the new score, 17-16.
Going into the locker room the Golden Griffins added two more points off a Kayla Hoohuli layup, 19-16.
At the top of the second half the offense came out strong, as Sutherland capitalized on a five-point play connecting on two free throws and a three-point field goal from the right side.
Moments later senior Katie Sheahin made the Greyhounds second-consecutive basket from downtown, tying the score 24-24, with just over 17 minutes left in the half.
Sutherland gave the Greyhounds the first lead of the second half, with a layup-free throw combo, 27-26.
Loyola held Canisius scoreless for over two minutes, by the help of junior Nneka Offodile in the post. Offodile recorded two blocks and two rebounds, before the Golden Griffins went on a 6-0 run.
With two minutes left in regulation, Canicius scored nine points from the charity stripe, despite back-to-back jumpers from Sheahin.
Canisius went 18-19 from the line, shooting a team-high 95 percent.
The Greyhounds outscored the Golden Griffins, 11-9, off second chance points, while the Griffs' bench outscored Loyola’s 18-4.
The Greyhounds return home to Reitz Arena to host the Manhattan Jaspers Friday, February 15 at 7 p.m. for Play 4Kay Day.
