Women's Basketball Drops Heartbreaker to Canisius, 77-74

Baltimore, Md. - In a game that featured 11 lead changes and nine ties, Canisius came out on top to defeat Loyola, 77-74 in women's basketball action at Reitz Arena Sunday. The Greyhounds fall to 7-14 with the loss and 6-6 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference while the Golden Griffs improve to 13-8 and 9-3 with the win.
The Greyhounds went on a 7-2 run to start the contest before a three by Becky Zak cut the lead to 7-5 at 15:40. The squads exchanged buckets to tie before a 6-0 run by thee Golden Griffs gave Canisius the 17-11 lead at 10:23. Loyola responded with a run of its own, 11-0 in under two minutes to give it a 22-17 advantage at 8:15. Katie Scherle sparked the run with the first two baskets. Canisius tied the contest again but Loyola maintained the lead with two free throws by Scherle for a 24-22 score at 6:55. The back and forth play continued before Canisius used two three-pointers by Cherri Wittlieb to claim the lead, 30-26 at 5:33. A three by Lauren Troupe cut the Golden Griffs advantage to 32-29 but Loyola did not get any closer for the remainder of the half as Canisius held a 40-35 lead as they headed into the locker room.
In the second half, Loyola reclaimed the lead early with a 6-0 run before a three by Abby Radunske returned the advantage to Canisius, 43-41. Loyola then went on an 8-1 run to build up a 50-44 lead, their largest of the contest at 15:31. But the exchange of the leads would continue as Canisius reclaimed it at 13:01 and used solid defense to build up a 54-62 score with 9:20 remaining. The two teams battled back and forth for the next nine minutes with the Golden Griffs before a 7-0 run by Loyola claimed the lead, 70-69 with 1:13 remaining. A layup by Brittany Dunn tied the contest at 69 while a 1-for-2 effort from the free-throw line gave the Greyhounds the advantage. After a 1-for-2 effort from the charity strip by Zak, Jessica Steeves nabbed a huge offensive board and scored for Canisius to give the Golden Griffs a 72-70 advantage with a layup. Wittlieb then went 2-for-4 from the line for a 74-70 advantage. Jill Glessner nailed a jump shot with 37 seconds left on the clock for a 74-72 score. Zak was sent to the line again with seven ticks left on the clock and sunk both shots for a 76-72 lead. Ebony Toliver tried to keep things going for Loyola with a layup with two seconds left but Wittlieb went to the line with one second left, hitting 1-of-2 for the 77-74 final.
Sunday's scoring effort was the highest for Loyola since its 71-55 win over Niagara on Jan. 22, 2005. Loyola held a slight advantage in rebounding at 32-30 and just outshot the Golden Griffs 51.8%-49.1%. Loyola shot an improved 78.9% from the free-throw line while Canisius was just 15-26.
Scherle led the Greyhounds with a double-double of 20 points and 11 rebounds. Jackie Valderas follwed with 14 points and eight rebounds. Dunn added a career-high of 13 with five steals and four assists and Glessner added ten. Krystle Harrington recorded a game-high seven assists.
Zak led the Golden Griffs with 18 points and five assists. Wittlieb followed with 13, Radunske added 12 and Karly Chesko chipped in 10 off the bench.
