WASHINGTON, D.C. - Loyola University Maryland women’s basketball dropped an evening contest against the American University Eagles, 63-38, from Bender Arena on Wednesday.

Senior Nicole Krusen led with a team-best 12 points, while freshman Lauren Daugherty chipped in an additional seven points and team-high seven rebounds.

In the first half, both teams were neck and neck from the field, as American held the slight advantage 51-50 percent. The Greyhounds shot 8-of-16 in the first 20 minutes, trailing 36-19 at the buzzer.

Coming back from the break, American (15-7, 8-3 Patriot League) used a 15-3 run over the first eight minutes to obtain its largest lead of the contest, 51-22.  Daugherty responded to the run only seconds later with the Greyhounds’ first field goal of the half, 51-24, with 10 minutes remaining.

Loyola (5-17, 2-9) went on to hold the Eagles scoreless for over five minutes. The Greyhounds capitalized on the Eagles seven missed scoring opportunities, recording six points and two steals during that time.

With five and a half minutes remaining, sophomore Jeneh Perry found the net on a successful jumper, 53-30, before Krusen connected on the lone three-pointer of the second half. The senior guard recorded both shots from behind the arc, shooting 2-5 for the night.

With four minutes remaining in the game, Loyola made four consecutive free throws to pull the deficit to 20, 57-37, but a three-point basket and layup by the Eagles once again put the team back on top by more than 20 points.

Krusen shot 100-percent from the charity stripe, while the freshman duo of Daugherty and Lisa Mirarchi combined for 7-of-10 from the line.

Loyola returns home for a pair of games, starting with the annual Play 4 Kay day on Saturday, Feb. 8. The Greyhounds tipoff against Lehigh University at 1 p.m., from Reitz Arena.
