Marshall, Sheahin Pace Women's Basketball Over Rider
Feb. 4, 2012
BALTIMORE - Freshman Kara Marshall scored a career-high 28 points and junior Katie Sheahin added 19 to pace the Loyola University Maryland women's basketball team to a, 71-57, win over Rider at Reitz Arena on Saturday afternoon.
Sheahin also had two steals in the game, giving the junior 250 in her career and tying her with Lorrie Schenning for the most in Loyola women's basketball history.
The win was the third-straight for the Greyhounds (10-13, 6-6 MAAC), giving the team its first three-game winning streak of the season, while avenging its loss to Rider back on Jan. 9. On the other side, the Broncs (10-13, 2-10 MAAC) dropped their eighth-straight contest.
Marshall and Sheahin combined for 47 points on 17-of-26 shooting while hitting six 3-pointers. It was the third-time in the last four games that Marshall has set her career-high in points, this time doing it on 10-of-14 shooting including four-for-four from 3-point range. The 28 points are tied for the most scored by a Greyhound this season, matching Sheahin's 28 against George Washington.
After allowing Rider to score 32 points in the paint in the first meeting between the two teams, the Greyhounds got physical on the defensive end, holding a much bigger Broncs' front line to 20 points inside. Caitlin Bopp, who scored 16 points and had 14 rebounds in the first game, was held to just four points and eight boards.
After Rider took an early five-point advantage, the Greyhounds went on a 17-4 to take a, 25-17, lead with 9:03 left in the first half and never trailed again in the game.
Marshall was on fire during the stretch, scoring 14 points. The freshman hit her first seven shots from the field and had 19 points at the half.
Loyola built the advantage to as much as 14 points during the first 20 minutes following a deep 3-pointer by Marshall from the left wing at the 3:20 mark.
The Broncs cut the deficit to 10 just before halftime after a 3-pointer by Kornejlia Valiuskyte with nine seconds remaining, making the score 39-29 in favor of Loyola as the teams went to the locker rooms.
Rider trimmed the Loyola lead to single digits twice in the second half, the last time coming after an Emily Fazzini 3-pointer with 17:21 remaining that put the score at 44-36. Fazzini and MyNeshia McKenzie led Rider with 12 points each.
Loyola quickly pushed the advantage to double-digits with a 7-2 spurt, featuring four points by McKenzie and another 3-pointer by Marshall that gave the Greyhounds a 51-38 lead at the 14:45 mark. Loyola led by no less than 10 for the rest of the game.
Marshall capped her day in spectacular fashion, finishing a driving right-handed layup while getting fouled to give the Greyhounds their biggest lead of the game at 70-51 with less than two minutes to go.
The win was the 10th-straight for the Greyhounds at home over Rider and moved the team to .500 in the MAAC for the first time this season. Loyola has defeated the Broncs in five of the last six meetings.
Sheahin's record-tying steal came with 11:53 remaining, picking off a pass from Alyssa Parsons. The junior will have a chance to go for the record at home on Friday night when the Greyhounds take on Iona on ESPN3 at 7 p.m.
