Women's Basketball Tops Niagara 65-55

Niagara University, N.Y. - The Loyola College women's basketball team topped Niagara University 65-55 Saturday afternoon at the Gallagher Center. The Greyhounds improve to 13-9 on the season and 8-4 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play while the Purple Eagles fall to 12-11 overall and 4-8 in the league.
Loyola came out strong, outscoring Niagara 8-2 in the first two minutes of play. The teams went back and fourth for the next two minutes but after a Purple Eagles basket at 14:48 and the score set at 10-7, the `Hounds went on a nine-point run to take a 19-7 lead. Jill Glessner and Vika Sholokhova scored four points each in the run while Meghan Wood added a one-for-two effort from the free-throw line. The Greyhounds worked to retain the lead behind the strong first-half play by Sholokhova (nine points, 11 rebounds), Glessner (eight points) and Wood (seven points). Loyola led 32-20 at intermission.
The Greyhounds got up by as much as 15, 48-33 at 11:57 after Glessner scored six straight points to Niagara's two. The Purple Eagles used three-point shooting to cut the `Hounds led to single-digits, 50-41 at 8:44. Niagara got as close as six points at 7:08 after a three by Sara Prybyl but Loyola worked hard to keep the Purple Eagles at bay. The `Hounds outscored Niagara 13-6 over the final seven minutes for the 65-55 win.
Glessner led with 18 points for the Greyhounds. She added eight rebounds Sholokhova added 16 and 13 rebounds for the double-double. Wood added 11 points and nine rebounds for the near double-double. Brittany Dunn added four points, four rebounds and six assists.
Niagara was led by Jennifer McNamee's 13 points while Shaunna Ambrose added 12.
Loyola outrebounded the Purple Eagles 49-30 and outshot them 43.1% to 35.1%.
The Greyhounds return home to host Saint Peter's Thursday night at Reitz Arena. Tip-off is set for 7:00.
