Women's Basketball Earns 71-68 Overtime Win Over Niagara
Jan. 31, 2013
BALTIMORE - An Alyssa Sutherland short-jumper with eight seconds left in regulation tied the game and sent the Loyola University Maryland women's basketball team into overtime, ultimately earning a win over Niagara University, 71-68, in Reitz Arena Thursday night.
The Greyhounds (8-12, 3-6 MAAC) had three players score double figures, including Katie Sheahin, who was one rebound shy of a double-double. The senior guard scored 21 points, her second-consecutive 20-plus point game since Iona with 23 points. Underclassmen Tiffany Padgett contributed 12 points, while Kara Marshall chipped in 11. Both Marshall and Sutherland distributed five assists in the green and grey's second home victory of the four-game home stretch.
For Niagara (9-11, 4-5), Lauren Gatto had a game-high 25 points, as Meghan McGuinness and Shy Britton knocked in 16 and 14 points, respectively.
The Purple Eagles led by as much as seven points in the first 20 minutes, after a Britton layup, 25-18, less than ten minutes left in the half.
Back-to-back trips to the paint by junior Nneka Offodile helped the Greyhounds to a 33-29 lead, but Niagara would gain a one-point advantage going into the locker room at halftime.
Sheahin made five of her seven field-goal attempts in the first half, helping Loyola to a game-high 56 percent.
The Greyhounds took the first lead of the second half, 40-38, after a Nicole Krusen three-point field goal from the right side.
Niagara went on a 6-0 run following a Marshall three-pointer, but the run was halted by a Diana Logan free throw with less than 12 minutes left in the second half.
The Purple Eagles regained a seven-point lead after a pair of Gatto layups, but a Sutherland rebound-layup combination cut the deficit to five.
Sutherland's jumper sent the game into overtime, where Niagara took the quick lead, 63-61, on a Britton two-point shot. The Greyhounds countered, scoring six points before the Purple Eagles answered back, 69-65, with thirty seconds remaining.
Loyola scored two-more points on Sheahin and Sutherland free throws, while Niagara tried to comeback with a three-point field goal three seconds left in overtime. The Kelly Van Leeuwen shot from behind the arc would not be enough to lift the Purple Eagles past the Greyhounds.
Padgett led the defense recording a team-high five steals, while forwards Offodile and Sutherland both tabbed one block each.
The Greyhounds will return to action on Saturday when they host Siena College in Reitz Arena at 2 p.m.
