Holy Cross Pushes Past Women's Basketball, 80-65
Jan. 29, 2014
BALTIMORE - Loyola University Maryland women’s basketball held College of the Holy Cross to only two points in the final five minutes of action, despite dropping an 80-65 Patriot League contest from Reitz Arena Wednesday evening.
Freshman Lisa Mirarchi led the Greyhounds with 16 points, while junior Nai Brown added 13 and senior Nicole Krusen chipped in 10. Sophomore center Tiffany Padgett led the team’s rebounding efforts with six total boards.
Loyola (5-15, 2-7 Patriot League) ended the contest with eight-unanswered points, using a 14-2 run over five minutes to cut a 20-plus point deficit to 15 by the final buzzer.
Holy Cross (13-7, 5-4) led for the final 20 minutes, despite a first half which attributed to two tied scores and two lead changes. Both teams got off to a slow start, scoring a combined 22 points half way through the first half. The Crusaders were able to find an offensive spark, using a 15-4 run to hold a double-digit lead over the Greyhounds, 20-9. The rookie duo of Mirarchi and Lauren Daugherty pulled Loyola back within eight, but the Crusaders responded and controlled a double-digit lead for the remainder of the contest.
The Crusaders’ Raquel Scott and Molly Hourigan recorded a pair of double-doubles, attributing for two of the team’s four players in double figures.
Loyola’s defense showed up strong on Wednesday forcing 13 Holy Cross turnovers to its own seven, a season-low for the Greyhounds. Loyola also held a 6-5 steals advantage and 3-2 blocks advantage.
Loyola’s top free-throw shooters in program history, Mirarchi and Krusen, hit 100-percent of their attempts from the charity stripe on Wednesday. Daugherty also went 2-2 from the line, helping the Greyhounds to 68-percent from the charity stripe.
Loyola begins the second half of Patriot League play on Saturday, traveling to the United States Military Academy for a 1’oclock matchup with the Black Knights.
