Army West Point Snaps Women's Basketball's Win Streak
Army West Point snapped the Loyola University Maryland women’s basketball team’s three-game win streak Saturday afternoon, handing the Greyhounds a 62-47 loss at Christl Arena.
Sophomore Alexis Gray led Loyola (6-15 overall, 4-6 Patriot League) with 11 points, while freshman Isabella Therien added 10. Sophomore Stephanie Karcz finished with a team-best 12 points, four assists and three steals.
For Army West Point (11-10, 4-6), Madison Hovren, the Patriot League Preseason Player of the Year, led all players with 23 points, while she also had 11 rebounds.
The Greyhounds scored the first five points of the game, and although the Black Knights answered with five of their own, junior Ashley Hunter and classmate Courtney Vannoy kept Loyola in front with points of their own, pushing the score to 9-5.
Army West Point evened the game for a second time, at nine, and then again at 11 following Hunter’s basket.
Karcz’s free throw kept the Greyhounds ahead, but the Black Knights’ 3-pointer at 2:04 gave Army West Point its first lead of the game. Therien knotted the game for a fourth time, at 14-14, but the Black Knights earned a 16-14 advantage by the time the first-quarter time expired.
Scoring was limited at the start of the second quarter, as the Black Knights scored first, but the next points wouldn’t come until Gray’s jumper at the 5:04 mark.
The Black Knights went on a scoring spree after that though, scoring 10-straight points to pull ahead 12, at 28-16.
Loyola answered with an 8-2 run on a pair of treys by Gray and free throws by Karcz pulling the Greyhounds within six, at 28-24, but the two teams traded points to end the quarter with Army on top, 32-26.
The Black Knights stretched their lead to 15, 43-28, by the 6:21 mark of the third quarter, before freshman Delaney Connolly’s basket and Karcz’s free throws pulled Loyola within 11, at 43-23. Five-straight Black Knight free throws, followed by an and-1 opportunity for Army West Point, put the black and gold ahead by 19, at 51-32.
Therien closed out the quarter with a jumper, but the Black Knights started the fourth quarter with a 3-pointer and tacked on two more jumpers for a 7-0 run that put them ahead 58-34. The Greyhounds closed out the game with 13 of the final 17 points, but Army West Point went on to win, 62-47.
The Greyhounds will have a week before their next game, when they travel to Holy Cross on Saturday for a 1 p.m. tipoff.
