Valderas and Scherle Lead Loyola Past Saint Peter's, 79-69

Baltimore, Md. - The Greyhounds posted four players in double figures including a double-double by Katie Scherle and a career-high of 20 points by Jackie Valderas for a 79-69 win over Saint Peter's Monday afternoon at Reitz Arena. Loyola improves to 5-10 overall and a 4-2 record in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference while the Peahens fall to 5-10 and 1-5 in the conference.
Saint Peter's used solid shooting in the first half to gain as much as a 29-20 advantage with 5:39 remaining before Loyola went on a 10-0 run to take a 31-29 lead at 3:10. The run was sparked by two lay-ups and a free-throw by Vanessa Ruffin and was closed by four straight points by Valderas. The squads exchanged points three times for a 37-35 Loyola advantage at 1:17 before Kristen Hood went 1-for-2 from the charity stripe and Tyonna Vance hit a three for Saint Peter's to reclaim the lead 39-37 with just 40 seconds remaining. But Valderas put a stop to the Peahens run, scoring the last four points pf the half to give the Greyhounds a 41-39 lead as they headed into the locker room at the half.
In the second half, Loyola gained an eight point advantage on back-to-back baskets by Brittany Dunn before a 6-0 run by SPC cut the lead to 52-50 with 14:49 left to play. The back and forth play continued as neither team led by more than four points until under the two minute mark. Valderas sparked a 6-0 Loyola run with a basket and two free-throws before Scherle went to the line making both shots as well for a 67-61 score at 2:31. Loyola would hit the charity strip for a total of 11 shots, making 10 over the final two and a half minutes to build up the 79-69 final. SPC went 4-for-4 from the line in that time and had two jumpers by Tiffany Jones but it was not enough to close the gap.
Valderas led the team off the bench with 20 points, added eight boards and shot 6-for-9 from the floor and a perfect 8-for-8 from the free-throw line. Scherle added 17 and 11 rebounds for her fourth career double-double and her first this season. Krystle Harrington added a solid 14 points, eight rebounds and five assists. Dunn rounded out the Loyola players in double figures with 11 points.
The Peahens were led by Klaisha Lewis with 22 points. Hood recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Bethany Andreson added 12 points and Johnell Burts 10 to round out SPC's high scorers.
Loyola held a substantial 40-30 advantage on the boards and out-shot the Peahens both from the field and from the charity stripe. The Greyhounds shot 46.2% from the field and 75.6% from the free-throw line while Saint Peter's went 44.4% from the field and 62.1% from the charity stripe.
The Greyhounds remain at home as they host Rider at home on Thursday, January 20 at 7:00 p.m.
