Women's Basketball Holds Off Canisius, 88-76

BALTIMORE, MD - The Loyola College women's basketball team defeated Canisius, 88-76 behind career-highs in points by sophomores Katie Scherle and Jill Henn Friday evening at Reitz Arena. The Greyhounds improved to 7-7 and 3-2 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference while the Golden Griffs fall to 6-8 and 1-4 in the conference.

After a tight first half (36-31) that posted four ties and six lead changes, Loyola went on a 9-0 run to start the second half. The run was sparked by a three-pointer from Lauren Troupe at 19:42 and baskets from three other Greyhound players for a 45-31 lead at 18:47.

Loyola got up by as much as 16 with 14:27 remaining before the Golden Griffs went on an 18-4 run to cut the lead to one at 8:37. Lonnie Brown scored four baskets for Canisius in the run. The Greyhounds held on however, never relinquishing the lead. Henn scored 10 points in the final six minutes of play for the victory.

The Greyhounds posted three players in double figures including career-highs from Scherle (25) and Henn (16). Scherle shot a near perfect 11-for-12 from the floor while Henn hit 3-for-4 from three-point range and 7-for-8 from the charity stripe. Senior Lindsay Cobb also posted double-digits scoring 14 points and added five assists and steals. Point-guard Krystle Harrington tallied eight assists.

Loyola shot 69.6% in the second half and 56.1% on the night in the victory. The 'Hounds also shot 55.6% from three point range. As a team, the Greyhounds accumulated 22 assists to Canisius' 12. The Golden Griffs outrebounded Loyola however, 36-29.

Canisius posted six players in double figures led by Brown with 18. Becky Zak added 12 while Jess Steeves, Cheri Wittlieb and Karly Chesko all tallied 11 points. The Greyhounds held the pre-season MAAC Player of the Year, Jenel Stevens to eight points but Stevens dominated the boards with 13.

 

 

Loyola will host Niagara on Sunday, January, 18. Sunday will be another double-header with the men's team with the women's game starting at 2:00 p.m.
