Lafayette Pushes Past Women's Basketball, 65-53
Jan. 15, 2014
EASTON, Pa. - Junior guard Nai Brown led all scorers with 14 points, but it was not enough to lift Loyola University Maryland women's basketball over Lafayette College, 65-53, at the Kirby Sports Center Wednesday evening.
The win was the second straight for the Leopards, who improved to 8-8 and 2-3 in the Patriot League. Both Lafayette and Loyola entered the evening's contest 1-3 in the conference, but the Greyhounds fell to 4-12 and 1-4 in the league.
Freshman Lisa Mirarchi added 10 points to the Greyhounds' offensive effort, while tackling on two rebounds and a pair of assists. Wednesday night was Mirarchi's 13th straight game helping her teammates and adding numbers to the assist's column. Sophomore Jeneh Perry had a team-high 10 rebounds and was four points shy of a double-double.
It was the Brown's 13th double-figure score, after recoding a career-high 25 points at Lehigh University last weekend. The junior has recorded three or more field goals in 16-straight contests, after averaging only 2.6 points in 7.5 minutes of action last season.
Emily Homan led Lafayette with 11 points, but the Leopards used an entire team effort to pull off the 12-point victory. Of the 13 players that hit the hardwood at the Kirby Sports Center, 12 scored points for the evening.
The Leopards outshot the Greyhounds 49.1-percent to 37.3-percent for the game, while also narrowly outrebounding Loyola 33-30.
The Greyhounds tied the score twice in the first half, but a 12-0 run by the Leopards gave Lafayette its first double-digit lead of the contest, 18-6.
Loyola chipped away at the deficit pulling within single figures after a Tiffany Padgett layup, 27-18. Moments later senior Nicole Krusen knocked down a three-point field goal, 27-21, but Lafayette countered with the same shot and entered the locker room, 34-25.
Coming back from the break, Lafayette regained the double-figure lead, not letting go for the remainder of the contest. The Leopards nearly replicated their earlier first half run, 11-2, before a pair of three's by Krusen and Padgett put Loyola back on the board.
Lafayette led by as much as 19 points on two separate occasions, the final instance occurring with just over five minutes remaining. Over the next two and a half minutes, the two teams traded baskets, 64-48.
Loyola held the Leopards scoreless in the final two minutes of action, tallying three of its last five points from the charity stripe.
Once again, Mirarchi shot 100-percent from the free-throw line, while Brown and Krusen both tallied three charity stripe points.
The Greyhounds return to action on Sunday afternoon hosting fellow Patriot League newcomer Boston University. Tipoff is slated for 1 p.m. from Reitz Arena.
