Saint Peter's Pushes Past Loyola On Field Trip Day
Jan. 13, 2012
BALTIMORE - The Loyola University women's basketball team fell, 68-51, to Saint Peter's at Reitz Arena on Friday, as more than 900 students filled the gym for Field Trip Day.
The loss dropped the Greyhounds to 5-11 overall and 1-4 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. Saint Peter's improved to 1-15 overall and 1-4 in the MAAC.
Miriam McKenzie paced the Greyhounds with 21 points, scoring 16 in the first half and adding a team-best eight rebounds. Freshman guard Kara Marshall added 14 points while playing 40 minutes and Katie Sheahin had nine.
McKenzie now has 1,200 points and 597 rebounds in her career. She is three rebounds shy of becoming the sixth player in Greyhound history to finish her career with over 1,000 points and 600 rebounds.
The Peahens had three players in double figures. Jynae Judson led the squad with 16 points, while Kristal Edwards added 13 and Quiana Porter had 10.
The Greyhounds tied a team record with 18 steals in the contest, led by Marshall's career-high seven. Marshall became just the fifth different player in Greyhound history to record seven or more steals in a game.
Sheahin extended her steals streak to 27-straight games while collecting multiple steals for the 11th-straight contest after recording two thefts.
Freshman forward Cierra Darden earned her first career start for Loyola, scoring her first career field goal and finishing with two points, four rebounds and two blocks in 24 minutes. Senior forward Kathleen Excellent also made her first career start, playing in a career-high 23 minutes.
The Peahens outshot the Greyhounds 48.1-percent to 35.2-percent in the game, while also out-rebounding Loyola 44-26.
Saint Peter's led from start to finish in the contest, leading by as many as 18.
The Peahens started the game on a 12-2, with all five starters scoring in the first six minutes of the contest.
The Greyhounds chipped away at the lead, going on an 11-3 run with McKenzie scoring seven during the stretch. The senior capped the stretch with a 3-pointer from the right wing that cut the deficit to two at 15-13 with 9:29 remaining in the first half.
That would be as close as Loyola would come for the rest of the contest, as the Peahens pushed the lead to double figures with a Judson 3 with 3:10 left in the first half. The Peahens took a 34-27 lead into the break.
The Peahens matched the beginning of the first half with another 12-2 run to being the second half, taking a 46-29 lead with 13:58 to go.
Saint Peter's took its largest lead of the game at the 10:21 mark, when Kaydine Bent put home a layup off an assist by Aziza May.
The Greyhounds proceeded to outscore the Peahens 16-7 over the next five-plus minutes of the contest, getting to within nine points at 57-48 after a Marshall put-back layup with 5:03 remaining.
Saint Peter's finished the game by scoring 11 of the final 14 points to beat the Greyhounds for the third-straight time at Reitz Arena.
Loyola returns to action on Sunday afternoon at Reitz Arena when the Greyhounds host Siena at 2 p.m.
