Sophomore Stephanie Karcz broke the Loyola University Maryland women's basketball program's NCAA Division I record for rebounds in a game Thursday afternoon, grabbing 21 in the team's 71-58 loss to American on Field Trip Day at Reitz Arena.

Karcz also turned in 12 points for her fourth-straight double-double, while sophomores Izzy Therien and Delaney Connolly led the team with 19 and 13 points, respectively. Junior Ashley Hunter added seven points and eight rebounds.

Cecily Carl led all players with 20 points, while she also led American (12-4 overall, 5-0 Patriot League) with 15 rebounds. Emily Kinneston chipped in 14 points.

Behind baskets from Connolly, Therien and Karcz, Loyola (3-13, 1-4) jumped out to a 6-0 lead. The Eagles responded with seven-straight points of their own to take a brief 7-6 lead, but Hunter put Loyola back on top with a layup.

Junior Courtney Vannoy's steal out of the first media timeout led to sophomore Alexis Gray's 3-pointer that extended Loyola's lead four, at 11-7, but American's four-point run knotted the score at 11 all. A pair of free throws from Therien kept the Eagles from regaining the lead, but American scored the final points of the quarter to even the game at 13-13.

Therien started the second quarter's scoring, but the Eagles strung together 14-straight points after that to pull ahead 27-15. Therien and Hunter combined for nine of the game's next 11 points to cut Loyola's deficit to five, at 29-24, and Connolly then answered American's free throws to keep the Greyhounds within five, 31-26, at halftime.

Hunter made it a one-possession game with a layup out of the intermission and Karcz answered American's basket to keep Loyola within three, at 33-30. Five points from the Eagles put American back up eight, 38-30, before a pair of free throws from Therien led to the media break, with Loyola down 38-32.

American scored the next nine points and eventually 13 of the next 17, before Connolly sandwiched a pair of 3-pointers around the Eagles' layup, bringing Loyola within 12, at 54-42, heading into the fourth quarter.

Therien converted a free throw to cut the deficit to 11, before Connolly's trey pulled Loyola within 10, at 56-46. Therien's layup saw Loyola come within 10 again, at 58-48, with 7:52 to play, but that would be as close as the Greyhounds would get, as American stretched its lead to 19, at 71-52. Karcz then scored the final six points of the game to account for the 71-58 final.

Loyola will return to action on Saturday as it travels to Lafayette for a 2 p.m. tipoff.
