Jan. 11, 2004
LOUNDONVILLE, NY - A team effort from the Loyola College women's basketball team earned them a 66-52 victory over Siena on Sunday afternoon at the Alumni Recreation Center. The Greyhounds improve to 6-7 overall at 2-2 in the MAAC while the Saints fall to 7-7 and 3-2 in the conference.
The two teams battled back and forth for the first 15 minutes of the first half before sophomore Katie Scherle broke the lead open at six with a 25-19 score nearing the end of the half. Siena's Natalie Marchino brought the Saints within four at the close of the half for a 25-21 Loyola lead at the break. Scherle scored 12 of the 'Hounds 25 points in the first half.
Siena battled back early in the second half and took a one-point advantage on another basket by Marchino at 13:41 before Loyola took that lead right back on a jump shot by freshman Brittany Dunn from the right corner at 13:24.
Scherle built the Greyhound lead up again with back-to-back jump shots at 9:53 and 9:09 for a 42-37 score.
The Saints continued to pound with Marchino's three at 8:44 for a two-point game and two free-throws from Katelyn Dooley for another tie, this time at 42. Loyola then went on a 10-2 run for a 52-44 lead. A basket from the deep right corner by senior Lindsay Cobb clinched the game with 1:37remaining.
Loyola shot 50.9% Sunday to Siena's 38.5%. The 'Hounds also shot 83% from the free-throw line. They played tremendous team basketball, accumulating 21 assists for 28 baskets.
"This was a great effort from top to bottom by our team," head coach Candy Cage said of the win. "Everyone came to play today."
