Greyhounds Drop Mid-Day Contest To American
Jan. 8, 2014
BALTIMORE - Loyola University Maryland women’s basketball used a 12-2 run in the final two minutes to cap of a strong second-half effort despite a 52-34 loss to American University Wednesday afternoon on Field Trip Day.
After a first half that garnered 10 points, the Greyhounds returned from the locker room with new energy. Senior Nneka Offodile sparked the offensive effort after connecting on a jumper from Perry, 34-12, with 13:10 remaining. Moments later a pair of free throws by Mirarchi pulled Loyola within 22, 36-14, but it was a Lauren Daugherty three-point basket that put the fans on their feet. The freshman forward connected on her first collegiate three, scoring a career-high five points.
In the next two minutes, Loyola’s top free-throw shooters in program history, Mirarchi and Nicole Krusen, went to the line, ultimately chipping away at the 20-plus point deficit. Krusen’s charity-stripe point with eight and a half minutes remaining pulled the Greyhounds within 19, 40-21.
American’s Arron Zimmerman layup at 6:41 gave the Eagles another 20-plus point lead. Zimmerman led all scorers Wednesday afternoon with 21 points.
Zimmerman scored the next six points for American (9-5, 2-1), before a Shaquilla Curtis paint jumper gave the Eagles their largest lead of the contest, 50-22.
With 2:12 remaining, a solo charity strip point by Perry sparked a 12-2 run that included eight points by the freshmen duo of Daugherty and Mirarchi, and a three-point field goal by Krusen.
In the second half, Loyola’s bench outscored American 9-2, while the Greyhounds also held a 7-4 advantage in second chance points.
Loyola will return to action on Saturday, Dec. 11, when the Greyhounds travel to Bethlehem, Pa., to take on Lehigh University at 2 p.m.
