Women's Basketball Drops Overtime Decision To Army
Jan. 5, 2014
BALTIMORE - Junior Nai Brown and freshman Lisa Mirarchi knocked down a career-high points, but the Loyola University Maryland women's basketball team fell to the United States Military Academy in overtime, 66-62, Sunday afternoon from Reitz Arena.
Brown recorded 24 points and six rebounds, while Mirarchi chipped in 17 points and four assists. Senior Nneka Offodile grabbed a team-high six rebounds.
Loyola (3-10, 0-2 Patriot League) led at halftime for the first time all season, outscoring the Black Knights, 32-22, in the first 20 minutes. The Greyhounds shot 41-percent from the floor in the first half, and connected on four of six shots from the free-throw line.
The Greyhounds led by as much as 10 points on two separate occasions in the second half. After Army (10-3, 2-0 PL) chipped away from a 10-point deficit to start the half, Loyola regained its momentum and led by 10 points with 13:23 remaining on a Brown layup, 42-32.
Army pulled within one after a 10-1 run, with just over 10 minutes remaining in regulation. Despite the Black Knights push, the Greyhounds continued to find the basket and maintain a lead until a Kelsey Minato three-point field goal, 47-47.
Brown gave Loyola the lead with under five minutes to go, on a pair of charity stripe points. The two teams traded free throws for the next three and a half minutes, but the Greyhounds maintained their lead during that time. It was not until 21 seconds remaining in regulation that Minato’s jumper knotted the score, 55-55, and sent the game into overtime.
Sophomore Tiffany Padgett scored the first basket of overtime, connecting on a right-wing shot from three-point range. Moments later, Army responded with a pair of charity stripe points by Jen Hazlett, but a paint jumper from Brown kept the Greyhounds on top. Over the next minute and a half, the two teams recorded two additional tied scores, until the Black Knights took their first lead since halfway through the first half. Minato scored Army’s six unanswered points, and ultimately gave the Black Knights their four-point victory.
Minato scored a game-high 29 points and teammate Olivia Schretzman grabbed a game-best 15 rebounds.
Coming into Sunday afternoon’s game, Army was ranked first among the Patriot League in free-throw percentage. The Black Knights were averaging 75-percent from the charity stripe, but that was not the case on Sunday. Army shot 54-percent from the line, while Loyola shot an impressive 68-percent.
Loyola held a 26-16 advantage in the paint, and recorded six fast breaks to the Black Knights two.
The Greyhounds will return to action on Wednesday when they host American at 11:30 a.m.
