FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Fairfield raced out to a 14-0 lead behind six Baendu Lowenthal points, and the Stags handed Loyola its first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference loss of the season, 71-50, on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Hall.

Lowenthal finished with a team-high 16 points, and Stephanie Geehan recorded a double-double with 12 points and a game-best 18 rebounds.

Led by Geehan's 18, the Stags (7-6 overall, 2-1 MAAC) outrebounded Loyola 31-11 in the first half, and 52-27 in the game.

"We put ourselves in a tremendous hole in the first few minutes of the game," Loyola Head Coach Joe Logan said. "Our effort was not there, and that was very disappointing. We cannot let a team outrebound us like they did, but I also have to give Fairfield credit."

Kaitlin Grant made a jumper in the paint to pull Loyola (7-6, 2-1) within 12, 29-17, with 5:17 to play. Twelve, however, was as close as the Greyhounds would come from that point forward.

Fairfield extended its lead to 23, 55-32, with 12:54 left as Tara Flaherty converted a layup and free throw for a conventional 3-point play, but Loyola would score 15 of the next 19 points, capped by four from Mallory Lawes to make it a 12-point game again, 59-57, with just under six minutes remaining.

Desiree Pina scored four in a row, and Shireyll Moore, Flaherty and Geehan added baskets to put the Stags back up by 23 with under 90 seconds left.

Grant finished with a game-high 17 points on 7-of-10 from the field, while Meredith Tolley and Siobhan Prior each added 10.

Pina scored 15 points, and Moore added 11 off the bench.

Loyola returns to MAAC action on Friday, January 9, 2009, when it hosts Saint Peter's on Field Trip Day, starting at 11:30 a.m.
