Women's Basketball Falls to Liberty, 80-69

Baltimore, Md. - Liberty fought back from a 10-point half-time deficit to defeat Loyola, 80-69 in women's basketball action Tuesday night at Reitz Arena. The Greyhounds fall to 2-9 with the loss while the Lady Flames improve to 7-4 on the season.

After exchanging leads for much of the first half and the score tied at 11at 12:27, Loyola went on a 13-4 run to claim a 22-15 lead at 10:13. The Greyhounds missed their first five shots but quickly warmed up hitting 10-of-11 shots over that period to gain an advantage. The squads traded baskets before Lauren Troupe scored four of her 14 first half points to give Loyola a 30-20 lead at 7:09. After trading buckets again, Liberty went on a six-point tear that lowered the lead to 32-26 with just a minute and a half remaining in the first half but the Greyhounds answered back with six straight points of their own to close the stanza and give them a 38-26 half time lead.

Loyola stayed up, by as much as 14 early in the second before the Lady Flames began to chip away at the lead. Liberty, with the Loyola lead cut to nine and the clock at 15:28, started an 18-5 run spurred by 6-8 center Katie Feenstra's 10 points to claim the lead, 54-52 with 8:25 to go. In that time, the Greyhounds were left with out a basket from the field. Krystle Harrington ended that drought at 7:20 to tie things up at 54.

Liberty quickly got up by eight before Loyola staged a come back behind four points by Katie Scherle to cut the Lady Flames lead to four with just over two minutes remaining and the score set at 66-62. But liberty would outscore Loyola 14-7 in that final two minutes including a 12-for-14 effort from the charity stripe for the 80-69 final. Harrington scored five of Loyola's seven points over the final 1:30.

The Greyhounds were led by Troupe with a season-high of 21 points. Harrington added a season-high herself with 18. Harrington also led on the board with six, dished out six assists and tallied three steals.

 

 

Feenstra tallied a double-double with a season-high of 33 points in addition to 14 rebounds. Kristal Tharp added 16 points and Daina Staugaitiene chipped in 13 to round out the Lady Flames in double figures.

Liberty held a substantial advantage on the boards at 37-22 and shot a season high of 87.9 percent from the free-throw line.

Loyola returns to conference play by traveling to Iona on Saturday, January 8 and return home to Reitz Arena on Monday, January 10 by hosting Siena.
