Tennis Records 7-0 Sweep Over Coppin State

BALTIMORE, Md. - Loyola posted a strong opening to dual match play Thursday, by going undefeated against Coppin State to start out 1-0. The Eagles hosted both the men and women's teams, with the Greyhounds going 7-0 and emerging victorious. Rachel Janasek's match against Nina Sebescen was the only one decided by a super tiebreaker. Janasek, Loyola's No. 1 singles player, battled the sophomore from Serbia for over two hours, defeating her 5-7, 6-4 (10-6) in the end. Janaseck defeated Ana Sebescen earlier in the match in doubles play with partner Kerri Swan. The duo downed Sebescen and Lauretta Makam 8-2 to start off the Lady `Hounds. Scarlet Hoy and Judy Lite then continued doubles play with an 8-2 defeat over Ana Sebescen and Sherice Coppin. Caitlyn Day and Stephanie Dunn then won by default. In singles, Swan defeated Ana Sebescen 6-1, 6-2, Scarlet Hoy defeated Coppin 6-0, 6-0, Lite defeated Makam 6-1,6-0 and Day and Lionetta won by default. On the men's side, Kenyan Sanai and Pierce Norton started the Greyhounds off on a winning note defeating Vicktor Lemberger and Jahra Wigtull. Sanai and Norton led the match at 4-1 before winning by default, due to an illness to a Coppin player. Kevin Zingler and Ryan Fitzgerald then defeated James Jeffreys and Quincy Darko 8-0, giving Matt McDaniel and Bobby Gorczakowski the win by default.
Sanai started off the men's singles play with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Lemberger. Norton overtook Jeffreys 6-2, 6-0, McDaniel defeated Wigtull 6-1, 6-5 and Zingler led 3-1 when Darko defeaulted due to sickness. Tim Koch and Bobby Gorczakowski both earned wins by default. Next up for the women is the George Mason 3+1 in Fairfax, Va., this weekend. The men will get the week off, and travel to Emmitsburg next week for the Mount St. Mary's Invitational. |
