Loyola Wins Second Consecutive MAAC Men's Commissioner's Cup
May 28, 2009
BALTIMORE - The Loyola College men's athletic programs earned the 2008-2009 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Men's Commissioner's Cup, the league office announced today. It is the second straight win for the Greyhounds' men's program.
"Winning the Commissioner's Cup for the second year in a row is a tremendous accomplishment by our student-athletes and our coaches," Loyola Director of Athletics Joe Boylan said. "They both work extremely hard and the results speak for themselves.
"Each represents Loyola in a positive way both athletically and academically. I want to thank the coaches who have provided excellent leadership and are a major part of this success."
Loyola won the men's Cup with 53.50 total points, edging Siena by a point, and Fairfield and Marist, which tied for third place, by four. Manhattan ( 48.50) earned fifth, followed by Niagara (43), Rider (40), Iona (39), Saint Peter's (31) and Canisius (30.50).
The Commissioner's Cup is awarded annually as a symbol of overall excellence in athletics in the 24 championship athletic events conducted within the MAAC. Each institution is scored in all championships that it fields a varsity team. However, only the scores from the men's and women's basketball participation, plus the other top six men's and other top six women's championships are used to determine an institution's total points.
Seven of Loyola's eight male sports, excluding lacrosse, participate in the MAAC, making the victory a complete team effort from all sides of the spectrum. Leading the way for the men was the soccer team, which earned 14 points with their regular season title and an appearance in the conference tournament game. Conference tournament victories by the golf team and the swimming and diving teams accounted for 10 points apiece.
On the women's side, Loyola tied Iona for fourth place with 48.50 points, led by the soccer team's 14 points and the swimming and diving's eight. Fairfield (79) won the women's Cup, followed by Marist (61) and Canisius (56.50).
Fairfield also won the overall Cup with 128.50 total points, followed by Marist with 110.50. Loyola took third overall with 102 points.
