2009 Season Review: A Successful Season Helps Loyola Men Earn High Seed In MAAC Championships

The Greyhound men closed the 2009 season 11-6 overall and 3-4 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. The team kicked off the season with two shut-out victories over St. Francis (Pa.) and Coppin State in February and a 4-3 win over Morgan State on March 11. Loyola then took two losses in the next two matches before plowing through March and April on a 7-3 run. The `Hounds defeated conference foes Niagara (6-1), Rider (6-1) and Siena (5-2) in the regular season and finished 10-5 overall and 3-3 in the MAAC going into the postseason.
The men's team earned the fourth seed in the 2009 MAAC Championships and faced Niagara in the first round on Friday, April 17. The Purple Eagles ended the Greyhounds' season with a 6-1 win at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York.
Sophomore Dan D'Agostino led the team in singles victories, playing at the number five spot. He finish 15-5 overall and 4-3 in the MAAC. Freshman J. Pierce Norton collected 13 wins at the No. 2 position and earned the 2009 Men's Tennis MVP award at the Athletic Awards Banquet. Sophomore Jamie Russo finished with 10 wins at No. 6 singles.
Junior captain Matt McDaniel earned the 2009 Men's Tennis Most Dedicated award and earned seven wins in both singles and doubles play this season.
Doubles duo D'Agostino and Russo earned an 11-7 overall record to lead the Loyola men's team at No. 3 doubles. The pair was also the only doubles team to have a winning record in conference play, finishing 4-3 in the MAAC.
The No. 1 doubles team of freshman Keyan Sanai and Norton garnered an 11-9 overall record. Sophomores Rob Mattison and Patrick Glaessner each collected a 6-2 overall record in doubles action. Paired together, the two went 5-1 for the season.
The Greyhound men also earned academic honors in 2009 by adding three members to the MAAC All-Academic Team. To be eligible, a student-athlete must complete two semesters and hold GPA of 3.2 or higher. D'Agostino (3.76 GPA, Economic major), McDaniel (3.69 GPA, History/Political Science major) and sophomore Jonathon Remalho (3.48 GPA, Biology major) all made the list for Loyola.
