Rick McClure is in his 28th year with the Greyhound tennis programs, having coached the men for 27 seasons while mentoring the women for the past 18 years.
Last season, Coach McClure guided the women's team to a 10-9 record, its 18th straight winning season. Meanwhile, the men's team recorded eight wins as the program celebrated a major milestone - it's 500th win. The victory came against Morgan State on March 1. During McClure's tenure, the Greyhounds have won 513 matches.
During McClure's run at Loyola, where he has coached the men since 1979 and the women since 1988, the women have compiled an impressive 271-62 (.814) record, at the same time capturing MAAC titles in 1990, 1991, 1993, 1994, 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2002. On top of the eight championships, the Greyhounds registered runner-up performances at the MAAC championships in 1992, 1995, 1996 and 1997.
McClure's coaching success; however, is by no means limited to the women's program. The New Jersey native has led his men's team to second-place finishes at the MAAC Championship tennis tournament in 1990 and 1991 and posted third-place showings at the 1992, 1994, 1995, 1996 and 2003 conference championships. During the 2003 season, McClure reached 200 career victories with the men's tennis program.
A 1976 graduate of the University of Maryland, Coach McClure played for the Terrapins' varsity program. His first two seasons of college eligibility; however, were spent at Mansfield State College in upstate Pennsylvania. He played both singles and doubles as a freshman and sophomore at Mansfield.
McClure also enjoyed a sparkling high school tennis career. In his four years at Phillipsburg (N.J.) High School, he compiled a record of 50-5 at No. 1 singles and an astounding No. 1 doubles record of 30-0. In 1972, he was selected as one of the top eight high school tennis players in the state of New Jersey.
Before taking over as head coach at Loyola College, McClure coached the Northampton County Community College tennis team in Bethlehem, Pa. for one season (1976-77).
Away from his duties at Loyola College, Coach McClure has worked at the Baltimore Country Club as the Assistant Tennis Professional. He also has been the pro at Hunt Valley Golf Club, Eagles Nest Country Club and the Harford County Tennis Barn and the Perring Raquet Club.
In November of 2003, McClure was inducted into the Loyola College Athletic Hall of Fame for his success as a coach and his service to the entire Evergreen Community. McClure joined Diane Geppi-Aikens, Anne McCloskey, Tom Murphy, Dr. Mike Ventura and the legendary Emil G. "Lefty" Reitz as the only coaches included in the school's Hall of Fame.
