Nov. 26, 2007
Baltimore, Md. - The Loyola men's soccer team will play 13th-seeded Maryland in the Second Round of the NCAA College Cup this Wednesday at 5 p.m. in College Park, Md. On Saturday, the Greyhounds used first-half goals from Eddie Dines and Phil Bannister and a second-half defensive stand with co-captains Josh Taylor and Tennant McVea, as well as goalkeeper Milos Kocic to defeat the Flames in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament. The win secured Loyola's 16th NCAA Tournament victory and sets up a re-match of the 2001 NCAA College Cup match at College Park.
Although the Terps hold a 25-8-6 series advantage, Loyola is 1-0 against Maryland in NCAA Tournament competition. In 2001, the Greyhounds visited College Park and came away with a 1-nil double overtime win. Loyola advanced to the Round of 16 that year - it's best tournament appearance as a Division I program.
The Greyhounds enter Wednesday's match with its most wins since 1993. Loyola has never won more than 19 matches at the Division I level and is two wins shy of its school record mark of 21 wins set by the 1976 NCAA Division II national champions.
Loyola is also the nation's top ranked team in shutout percentage with shutouts in 16 of its 22 games this season. The Greyhounds have seven straight shutouts and 13 in their last 14 matches. Kocic, a first-team All-MAAC selection, has 82 saves this season, a save percentage of .882 and a goals-against average of 0.50.
Maryland, meanwhile, is the tournament's No. 13 seed with a 10-5-4 overall record. The Terps are 8-1-3 at home this season and are led in scoring by Drew Yates, who has eight goals and 17 points.
Wednesday's match can be heard live with Loyola soccer alums Dave Gerrity and Bill Wnek calling all the action on LoyolaGreyhounds.com.
