BALTIMORE - The Loyola University Maryland men's soccer team learned this evening they will face the University of Maryland on Thursday, November 19, at 7 p.m. in the 2009 NCAA College Cup First Round.
The Greyhounds gathered in the University Student Center's Reading Room to watch the NCAA Selection Show live on ESPNNews. The winner of the Loyola-Maryland game will face Penn State in the second round on Sunday, November 22.
Loyola is making its school record third consecutive appearance in the Cup and its seventh in the school's NCAA Division I history.
On Sunday, the Greyhounds (11-7-3) earned a berth to the Cup with a 1-0 double-overtime victory against Niagara in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship Game. Freshman Matt Tyrie scored his first collegiate goal with just 23.8 seconds left in overtime, lifting Loyola to its 12th MAAC Championship.
Maryland, the 2008 National Champions, enters the tournament with a 12-5-2 record after losing to Virginia in the Quarterfinals of the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament. The Greyhounds and Terrapins last played in College Park, Md., in the 2007 NCAA College Cup. The teams played to a 0-0 draw, but Maryland advanced with a shootout win.
Last season, the Greyhounds were the ninth seed in the College Cup, receiving a first-round bye before hosting UNC Greensboro in the second round. The Spartans edged Loyola with a 2-1 overtime victory. In 2007, Loyola hosted, and defeated, Liberty in the first round and then played Maryland.
