Nine Greyhounds Named To MAAC All-Academic Team
Nov. 7, 2012
EDISON, N.J. - The Loyola University Maryland men’s soccer team placed nine Greyhounds on the 2012 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference All-Academic Team, as announced by the league office Wednesday night.
Seniors Hector Arellano and Zach Tweddell, juniors Stephen Dooley, Jamie Libby and Thurman Van Riper, and sophomores Joseph Cahalan, Carson Pryor, Connor Thompson and Andrew Waddington were all named to the team. To be eligible for the MAAC All-Academic Team, a student athlete must complete two semesters at their institution and hold a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 on a 4.0 scale.
Arellano is a midfielder from Virginia Beach, Va., majoring in electrical engineering. He has started 16 contests this year, assisting sophomore Connor Thompson’s game-winning goal versus Siena. An NSCAA Regional Scholar Honorable Mention in 2011, Arellano is making his third-straight appearance on the MAAC All-Academic team.
Cahalan started 14 of Loyola’s 18 contests on the back line and scored his first collegiate goal in a win at Fairfield. He also saved a ball off the goal line at UMBC and against Marist this season. Hailing from Reisterstown, Md., Cahalan is a business major and is a member of Loyola’s Sellinger Scholars program.
Dooley, majoring in business finance, is making his second-straight appearance on the MAAC All-Academic Team. A second-team All-MAAC selection this year, the Portstewart, Northern Ireland native is ranked fourth in the MAAC with 1.42 points per game. In 12 games this season, he has six goals and five assists.
Libby is a member of the Greyhounds’ defensive unit that leads the MAAC in shutouts (7) and is second in goals-against average (0.91). He also has two goals this season, including heading in the game-winner in overtime against Quinnipiac. A two-time MAAC All-Academic Team honoree, Libby is a business economics major from Romford, England.
Thompson was a first-team All-MAAC selection this year after ranking second on the team with 18 points. The Swindon, England native was tabbed the MAAC Offensive Player of the Week on October 29 and has six goals and six assists so far this season. A first-time MAAC All-Academic Team honoree, Thompson is majoring in digital media.
Tweddell is another member of the Greyhounds’ defensive unit that leads the MAAC in shutouts and is second in GAA. The back from Newcastle, England was also responsible for playing a free kick into the box against Saint Peter’s that Thompson then one-timed into the back of the net for the game-winner in double overtime. As a advertising, public relations and digital media major, Tweddell is earning his first all-academic team accolade.
Van Riper has started every game in goal for the Greyhounds this year. The Groton, Mass., native was named the MAAC Defensive Player of the Week three times this season and was also tabbed the ECAC Defensive Player of the Week on October 16. A business major, Van Riper is a member of Loyola's Sellinger Scholars Program and is a two-time honoree on the MAAC All-Academic Team. He also earned Capital One Academic All-District III First Team accolades earlier this week.
Pryor and Waddington round out the Greyhounds being honored, as both are making their first appearance on the MAAC All-Academic Team. Pryor, a forward from St. Louis, Mo., has yet to declare a major, while Waddington is a global studies major from Jamestown, R.I.
Top-seeded Loyola will open play at the 2012 MAAC Championships on Thursday with a semifinal contest against fourth-seeded Iona at Marist’s Tenney Stadium. Game time is slated for 9 p.m.
