Van Riper And Marshall Earn MAAC Weekly Honors
Oct. 15, 2012
BALTIMORE - Loyola University Maryland junior goalkeeper Thurman Van Riper and freshman midfielder Dominic Marshall have been named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week, respectively, as announced by the league office Monday.
The Greyhounds are coming off a 2-0 week in which they beat Marist, 2-1, in overtime on Friday, before knocking off Siena, 3-0, which was previously undefeated in MAAC play.
Playing all 185 minutes, Van Riper earned 10 saves and stopped 90.9-percent of shots faced, while allowing just one goal. On Sunday versus Siena, Van Riper stopped six shots to record his fifth clean sheet of the season and second in conference play. He also assisted his second goal of the year as he booted a ball down the field to sophomore Connor Thompson, who scored as time expired.
Marshall had a point in each of Loyola's wins this weekend, including setting up the Greyhounds game-winning goal in overtime against Marist on Friday. He played a cross from the corner onto the head of senior Gary Weisbaum for the 96th minute winner. Marshall then sent another cross into the box on Sunday to assist an insurance goal for Loyola.
This marks the second career weekly award for Van Riper, and second of the season (Aug. 27), while it is the first time Marshall has been tabbed the league's rookie of the week. Classmate Larry Ndjock earned the honor on September 4 and September 24.
The Greyhounds will return to action this weekend when they travel to Iona and Fairfield. Loyola will face the Gaels Friday at 3 p.m., and the Stags Sunday at 1 p.m.
