EDISON, N.J. - Junior goalkeeper Thurman Van Riper has been honored as the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference MAAC Men's Student-Athlete of the Week. Van Riper, a business and accounting major from Groton, Mass., was recognized for his work on the field and in the classroom.

Van Riper was tabbed this season's first MAAC Men’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week following Loyola’s season opening double-overtime 0-0 draw at Saint Francis (Pa.). Van Riper played all 110 minutes and stopped three Red Flash shots to record his first career shutout against a program that has run its record to 13-1-2 in its last 16 home contests.

This past weekend, Van Riper led the Greyhounds to overtime against La Salle, stopping four shots in regulation. Loyola was called for a foul in the box in the 98th minute though and the Explorers converted the penalty kick for the 1-0 victory.

Against Cal State Northridge, Van Riper stopped two shots to pick up his first win of the season, a 2-1 victory over a program receiving votes in the most recent national poll.

For the season, Van Riper has played all 297 minutes and 30 seconds, has stopped eight shots for an .800 save percentage and has allowed just two goals for an 0.61 goals-against average.

The Greyhounds will be back in action this weekend when they host Quinnipiac on Saturday at 7 p.m.
