BALTIMORE - Loyola University Maryland rising sophomore Larry Ndjock helped Reading United post its first-ever upset of a professional team in club history last week and will head to Harrison, N.J., to take on Major League Soccer powerhouse, the New York Red Bulls, in the third round of the 100th U.S. Open Cup Wednesday night. Game time is slated for 7:30 p.m., at Red Bull Arena.

United, a member of the Premier Development League (PDL), entered the match against USL PRO’s Harrisburg City Islanders riding a tremendous wave of momentum, as Reading started the season by scoring 13 goals while not conceding a single goal. United’s historic 1-0 win over their fellow Philadelphia Union affiliate helped them maintain their perfect start to the 2013 season and placed them in the third round of the Open Cup for the first time in club history. Reading has yet to allow a goal in the tournament.

In the first round, Reading United knocked out the NPSL’s FC Lehigh Valley United Sonic, 2-0.

Former Greyhound Kevin Curran, a 2013 graduate, is also participating in the 2013 U.S. Open Cup. A captain of the Ocean City Nor’easters club, Curran has helped the squad to a 2-0 over the New York Red Bulls U-23s in the first round and a 1-0 victory over USL PRO’s Pittsburgh Riverhounds in the second round. The Nor’easters will take on the MLS’s Philadelphia Union Tuesday night at PPL Park in Chester, Pa.

Rising senior goalkeeper Zach Kane is also spending his summer playing in the PDL, as he is suiting up with the Baltimore Bohemians. The club plays their home games at Loyola’s Ridley Athletic Complex, with their next game scheduled for Wednesday at 7 p.m., versus the Central Jersey Spartans.

The PDL is top developmental men’s league in North America with the 2013 season featuring 64 teams within four conferences throughout the United States and Canada. The PDL season consists of 14 regular-season matches for each team, seven home and seven away, and provides elite collegiate players the opportunity to taste a higher level of competition while maintaining their eligibility. The PDL has proven to be an important stepping-stone for top professionals now playing throughout the world.

The 2013 US Open Cup marks the 100th edition of the oldest national soccer competition in the United States. Last season, Major League Soccer club Sporting Kansas City won the Lamar Hunt Cup in front of their home fans, beating three-time U.S. Open Cup champions Seattle Sounders in a penalty shoot-out. The 2012 season also marked the first season in which all 16 U.S. based MLS clubs gained automatic bids to the Cup.
